Ultimate Comics Avengers vs New Ultimates #01
Mark Millar - Story
Leinil Yu - Pencils
Gerry Alanguilan/Jason Paz/Jeff Huet - Inks
Sunny Gho/Jim Charalampidis - Colors
One thing I need to get off my chest is that I love the edgy look to Leinil Yu's pencils. I really do not know what I like so much but this is the kind of gritty art that I love. I was first introduced to his stuff in Fallen Son and I never disliked an issue he had done since. Well, at least as far as art is concerned.
For those who have avoided the Ultimate universe since Ultimatum, you are much like me. That said, I thought this issue was going to be very confusing and I just figured I was going to be lost until I read a ton of back issues. Well, that was not the case. It had a few characters that I did not know about but I was still interested in them nonetheless.
Mark Millar, you have my deepest gratitude for making Thor speak normal again. I have no idea what that whole ancient crap wall all about in Ultimates volume 3 but I am so glad to see that it was swept aside. I just looked it up, volume 3 was written by Jeph Loeb.
Okay, so the story. We start in Bulgaria following a train across a bridge. Then it closes in on Thor's hammer sitting on the stracks. Let me say that again, Thor's hammer sitting on the tracks. The thing that can be moved by none but Thor.
So we get to see a really cool train crash scene and a little back story that led up to Bulgaria. Big things happened in the previous story arc that some of us clearly missed out on because the Triskelion island base is sitting in the middle of Iran.
The chickens have also finally come home to roost for Iron Man if any of you remember what his thing was from waaaay back in Ultimates volume 1. Then we also get a peek into the new Black Widow's life. The issue nears its end with a bit of an anticlimactic super boss battle. I will not tell you what happened but I will tell you it was with Mimic. Then we get to see who the big baddie is for this story arc. If any of you know Ultimate universe lore, this was not nearly as big of a shocker as the Ultimate Doom bid guy but it is still really cool.
Overall I was pretty pleased with the issue. It really only lost points with the Mimic battle but it is the first issue so it does need to build up that steam. It was a great start and I do look forward to the next issue. I give it a 8 out of 10 overall.
