After seeing the news, tv spots, trailers, ect, I think it's safe to say that pretty much all of us (with the exception of Crom) are very excited to see Thor in May. I am just as excited as anyone else to see it, but I can't help but notice one thing about it: given what we know about the movie so far, it looks very, very predictable.
Seriously, I bet I can predict the large majority of the plot right now. Here's how I see the movie going down:
The movie begins in Asgard. Thor, the rampant and foolhardy son of Odin, is leading himself and his friends to go have a big battle with the Ice Giants or something, just because they want to. The battle turns out rather poorly for Thor's side. Probably because somebody important died in the battle, or it has caused the tenuous relations between Asgard and the Ice Giants to break out into full-fledged war. Odin is furious with his headstrong brat of a son, and he removes his powers and hammer and banishes him to Midgard so that he can find humility and learn to be a true hero who uses his power responsibly. Meanwhile, Loki, who has always been jealous of Thor's awesomeness, begins concocting a plan to assassinate Thor now that he is weak. Thor ends up on Earth, and meets Jane Foster. Like any hot guy and girl combo in Hollywood, they are immediately attracted to one another. They will initially have hangups, both because Thor is a bit of an arrogant prick, and because Jane does not believe he is who he says he is. But these issues will be resolved by the end of the movie. While Thor is stewing in his dilemma about how to get his hammer back, the Destroyer armor shows up on Earth and starts hunting Thor down, destroying everything in it's path. Thor, being bullheaded and arrogant, tries to stop the Destroyer armor, but fails horribly because he does not have his powers. He barely escapes with his life. Eventually, the Destroyer armor comes back into play, but is this time endangering the life of Jane Foster. Thor, who is deeply in love with Jane despite only knowing her for a short time, forgets his selfishness and arrogance and puts everything on the line to save Jane. As we all know from Disney's Hercules, the willingness to put your life in peril for a beautiful girl is the epitome of heroism. Because of this, Thor is once again deemed worthy to lift Mjolnir. After a grandiose and epic battle which probably involves temporarily beating back the Destroyer armor, and then traveling back to Asgard, fighting Loki, and shutting the Armor down from some master control, Thor will save the world (and, even more importantly, Jane Foster) in the nick of time. At some point during the battle, Jane will see Thor with his hammer and Asgardian armor, and realize to her amazement that he is exactly who he has claimed to be. Loki will be imprisoned or banished for his treachery, but will vow revenge on Thor. Thor will be welcomed back to Odin's hall with open arms, but he will say that he has grown very fond of Midgard, and he would prefer to stay there so he can continue his relationship with Jane Foster and help in forming the SHIELD's new Avengers team.
Cue credits.
After the credits...
A scene most likely involving either Nick Fury, Agent Coulson, or both. Short conversation goes something like this:
"Sir, you're never going to believe what our scientists just found in a block of ice near Antarctica."
*lower ranking SHIELD agent hands higher ranking agent a file*
*guy reads file for a moment, looks shocked*
"This is truly remarkable. They really found...?"
"Yes, sir. Shield and all."
"What kind of condition is the body in?"
"Well, that's the real kicker sir." *dramatic pause* "He's alive."
/movie.
Any comments on this? Anybody read the trailers a different way, and see the plot going down differently from what I've described? Don't get me wrong. As accurately as I think I've predicted the plot of the movie, I'm still absolutely thrilled to see it next month. I'm just starting to think that with the kind of knowledge we have, both about the origin stories of comic book characters, and also about the standard plot style for Hollywood blockbusters, I don't think there's anything these movies can still do to surprise us.
