The Avengers series will be done here. Now try not to confuse this for Secret Avengers, New Avengers, Avengers Prime, Avengers Academy, Mighty Avengers, Dark Avengers, Avengers Initiative, Ultimate Avengers, Avengers, West Coast Avengers or even Young Avengers. All of those get their own threads people.
The Avengers 8
Brian Michael Bendis - Story
John Romita Jr. - Penciler
Klaus Janson - Inker
Dean White/Paul Mounts - Colorist
The Illuminati is back! Or at least for this one meeting anyway. Everyone gets to make their standard entrances. Strange does the pretty, Namor does the self-wanking, Xavier does.... well we will get to that, Reed says he was doing smart people stuff and Medusa subs for Black Bolt because he had his swan song already.
We learn that someone is gathering the Infinity Gems. That is a big deal to those who have not ever heard of them. So far, red and yellow have been accumulated. That is power and reality respectively.
We know this because Rulk had his butt handed to him by the thief who took those gems from the Illuminati. Rulk tells them that this guy holding the gems beats his face in until he passes out. I found that interesting because nowhere in the fight did the thief reveal gems. His fists were just glowing. I did not know glowing fists equal holding gems.
Anyway, the Illuminati does an investigation for clues as to who stole the gems. So they go to where Black Bolt had his gem, the reality gem, since Reed's red gem was taken with the power of the yellow gem. They find clues and Steve Rogers followed them with a ton of Avengers and he does not look pleased about a secret team.
Not a whole lot happened in the issue though I feel it was important to the overall story.
The art. I am not a fan of Romita. I am sorry to those who are but I think his art is sloppy and lazy. It is a bit on the gritty side so I think his art has a place in darker comics like maybe Punisher or whatever. But I do not feel it belongs in an Avengers book.
Okay the thing with Xavier. He is a telepath. Among the most powerful on the planet even. But Xavier cannot read a hard drive with his powers. That is exactly what Tony's brain was turned into after Extremis. Tony confirmed he had complete immunity from telepaths in Invincible Iron Man 9. Here is a scan of the panel. While I thought the panel itself was funny in that the armor used an exclamation point when activating its psychic defenses, that would have been appropriate pre-extremis. Now it just was a WTF moment for me.
Overall I give the issue a 5 out of 10. It is not a terrible issue but the story has some glaring holes and I hated the art.
