I've heard of the story (a TPB came out recently IIRC) but I haven't read it.

Well they allude to Steve coming around to Tony's point, but I still think he comes off looking a tad hypocritical.

Goddamnit Marvel!
Steve Rogers should not be apart of the Illuminati! The Illuminati are exactly the cause of so much death, destruction, and mistrust on Marvel Earth. You would think after WWH, that they would have seen just what a road to hell that they paved with their good intentions. The Illuminati is just like any group of powerful men making decisions about the world without any transparency. I'll allow for him hiding the Infinity Gems but to meet in secret for any other reason is just asking for trouble.
Steve is the head of SHIELD an intelligence organization that has always operated in secret. I have no real problems with him running a secret team of Avengers because SHIELD has always operated secret teams of people. When he starts building a secret negative zone prison and starts using criminals as personnel, I'll start to question him but Steve can't do that. Steve is incorruptible which is why he is the best person for his current job.
Is it just me or is Namor and Professor X having gems a bad idea given Namor's status as an X-man? Don't they live in the same place? It is already bad enough that 3 of the gems are in the same city now let's put a fourth one too?
TL;DR, Steve is too good for the Illuminati.

Have they even established that the post HAMMER organization is SHIELD? Because from what I've seen they never officially renamed things SHIELD.

Wasn't SHIELD named for Captain America's shield? It would make sense that it would go back to that when Steve Rogers took over. Can anyone confirm?

Clearly, preserving cosmic balance is only important when Mephisto is stealing the souls of X-Men and shit and not in a crisis showing how inadequate the defenses of six of the most powerful objects in the universe are. Hey, the Living Tribunal was about on the verge of wiping out the entire 616 universe because of all the craziness that happens there on a daily basis.

Yep, thank She-Hulk that the Living Tribunal decided to leave 616 alone. And on that note, thank She-Hulk that every time a major disaster that threatens the fabric of all of reality originating from 616 happens, that the Living Tribunal will leave it be.

How are they idiots again? um civil war, world war hulk and secret invasion ring any bells? Civil War wasn't the Illuminati decision, it was Tony being a retard. World War Hulk was caused by Miek, and Secret Invasion was going to happen one way or the other.

Look how they acted, they acted like morons and could have stopped it or at the very least written it like the characters are as smart as they actually are.
Anytime the Illuminati are written as acting together as the illuminati, marvel writers give them the idiot ball.

Civil War was a direct result of their vote to send the Hulk into Space. World War Hulk was a direct result of their vote to send the Hulk into Space. Secret Invasion was only possible because Civil War had created such discord between the heroes that a united front could not be formed easily. Dark Reign and Siege are direct results of Secret Invasion.
Simply put, the Illuminati have thousands of deaths and years of strife on their hands.

The SHRA was the result of the destruction in Stamford. World War Hulk occurred when Miek destroyed Hulks people and wife. Secret Invasion was being planned since the Kree-Skrull war. Yeah. Sound like the work of the illuminati

Do I need to explain this again?
The Destruction of Stamford was caused by Nitro using MGH. Now who gave him the MGH? Walter Declun, why? Because profits at Damage Control were slacking thanks to the loss of the biggest cash cow they had, the Hulk. Without the Hulk smashing cities, Damage Control was going to go under. So Walter decided to make his own destruction to clean up by providing Nitro with MGH. Had Hulk never been sent away, Damage Control would never have had to give Nitro MGH to cause destruction. Simply put, no Hulk = Civil War.
World War Hulk would not have happened had the Illuminati done more than just put Hulk on a rocket and launch it into space. Amadeus Cho mentions this stating that had they been monitoring it, they could have adjusted the trajectory and sent him to the world he was supposed to go to rather than Sakaar. Sending Hulk off planet was a stupid decision anyways as I explained above. No Hulk on Sakaar means no Miek the Unhived blowing up an entire city.
Secret Invasion was only really a threat because the heroes were divided so heavily thanks to Civil War which was the Illuminati's fault. A united Cap and Iron Man would have made their job quite difficult.
The Illuminati are to blame for every event I listed.
