Alright fellow Admins, where do each of you stand on the issue of the site potentially being made viewable to the public and what is your reasoning behind your stance?

I'm against it.
If they can't take 5 minutes to set up an account they probably aren't serious about posting here. I could understand if it was a time consuming process. In fact, I am going to create an alternate account to see how long it takes.

Ok, it took me two minutes.

I think it defends heavily on how much you want to promote via social networking. This way it allows those random individuals to see the site, and if they check it out enough, they might eventually join in.

That's a very valid point. Honestly, if everyone else is for it then I'm down.

I'm honestly on the fence about it. What about a one month trial period of making it publicly viewable and during that month we push the site by posting links to news articles, reviews and quality conversations in posts on the Facebook page? This might give us a good idea of if it's worth it or not. I see it as relatively low risk since we can change it back at any time and / or ban problematic members. Thoughts?

A trial run sounds like the best solution. I'm using the Ledger's address as my sig on CBR. Maybe that will help.

I thought about emailing some peeps that haven't posted in a while.

I also think us posting on the CL Facebook page links as ourselves will help show that "real people" use the site. I thought about emailing some peeps that haven't posted in a while. I was just thinking about that yesterday, I think it's a good idea as well.

I'm all for the idea. This site has been up for nearly two years. We've been doing the whole Facebook/personal invitations/advertisement on other boards thing all that time. No offense to everyone who has been heavily involved in the advertisement, but it obviously hasn't been working all too well. I think opening up the site might be a necessary step for getting more traffic on the site. In response to what Jake said, I know that I, for one, probably wouldn't take the two minutes to set up an account on a site I couldn't see.

WordPress will be open to the public, but registration required to post from what I've seen.

tbh, I can't quite afford to drop cash on a wordpress right now but soon I'll be in a less bill-ridden position and I could make it now for free but it'll cost more later on down the track if we want to attach .com's and nice video features.

Hmmm... Cost is a problem. I know my financial contributions would be worse than 0. I am thinking of opening up a starving student charity as a matter of a fact lol.

I'm not going to ask for donations, no one's rich. But give me a bit of time to sort this domain issue out with CloudAccess and by the time we're done with that I'll have enough to comfortably cover costs.

Is it possible to work on design before we get the domain? What I mean is like a demo offline model that can be made so once we do get the domain, we can move it over and have a working model instantly?

I know you can do that with HTML/CSS website design but no one uses that shit anymore. It is more limited than even the proboards site lol.

Not really, basically you save 40% if you pay up front before you begin any work. Frankly it won't take that long to set it up so I ain't even mad.
