Birds of Prey 09
Gail Simone - Story
Inaki Miranda - Art
Nei Ruffino - Colors
This issue is part 3 of the arc, "The Death of Oracle" and as far as stories go, it is not bad. We start with Dinah looking dead in the face of her dead mother. I am the kind of guy that gets a kick out of seeing the ghosts of a person's past in comics and that was pretty much all this issue was about.
In the previous issue, Dinah was touched by some gobbily-goo lady that has the power to make a person live through all the nasty stuff in their life all at once, usually causing the victim to commit suicide. So Dinah is folding like a house of cards and Batman brings her back to Oracle's base of operations.
While we are on that note, I have not been reading any other Batman issues since Bruce's return but he seems really out of character to me. I am used to Batman the hard ass. The way he is written in BoP is like he is ready to give everyone a hug. Hawk has more swag than Batman does in this issue.
Now when I previously said that it was not a bad story, I did not really mean it was good either. Everyone does feel a bit forced in their reactions. It is kind of cheesy actually. The only character I even like in the issue is Lady Blackhawk just because I read her bubbles with Amelia Earhart's voice. That "I want to do it because I want to do it" type of attitude and cadence. The story gets points for Dinah's mental turmoil but I could not really even appreciate it due to the art.
Now we are on the the ugly part of the review. The art is disturbingly bad. When it comes down to it, I could draw this crap and that is saying something. I went through the issue a second time just to see if there was anything drawn that was beyond my terrible ability and the answer is no. It was lazy and uninspired artwork.
Overall, I finished the issue without strong positive feelings about it aside from my odd way of reading Zinda Blake's parts. I picked up the series because I liked the previous series and Ed Benes was doing the art but he only stayed the first 4 issues and even on issue 4 he did not do all the art for it. It felt like a tease. Simone was doing decent with the series right before this issue though so I will give the series a little slack and wait for the next issue.
Overall I give this a 4 out of 10. Not good.
