Cable & Deadpool # 30 Civil War Tie-In
Writer: Fabian Nicieza
Penciler: Staz Johnson
Inker: Klaus Johnson
Issue #30 “The Hero Hunter”
Deadpool is throwing down with the Great Lakes Avengers (Flatman. Doorman, Big Bertha & Mr. Immortal) Wade is having trouble with his dialogue boxes because apparently the GLA can also read them. The also insist their new name is the Great Lakes Champions. He says he thought he was in first person narrative form and says he’s bringing them in to put a big notch in his hero hunting belt. After the usual GLA jokes (calling them feebs & losers, making fun of their new name) Wade beheads Mr. Immortal until Big Bertha snares him in a crushing bear hug. After apparently copping a feel on her to escape he detonates a concussion grenade and we get to see his awesome healing factor on display. Thinking the battle won Wade is then attacked by Squirrel Girl whose name he can’t recall. “Nutcase Girl? Tail Girl?” Again his first person narrative isn’t working and she informs him it’s definitely Squirrel Girl.
She puts a pretty bad hurting on Wade and the GLC turn him over to the local cops. Wade tells the cops that he’s a mutant member of the X-Men and he was forcing them to register for the SHRA. The cops tell him they’ve already registered and Wade is surprised. Mr. Immortal says he was trying to tell him that before he lopped off his head. He also says he isn’t a mutant or an X-Man. Wade wants to know if he has the trading card set or something and Mr. Immortals mumbling about it being mostly for looking through. A federal agent arrives and wants to recruit Wade as a bounty hunter to enforce the SHRA. Wade wants to know if he can hurt them and the agent says as circumstances warrant.
Eleven hours later and we go to Manhattan. Wade is in one of his hideouts when Cable surprises him. Cable wants to know if he decided to work for them and Wade says yes. Wade says they could team up and go after Mr. Fantastic but Cable says he’s already registered. Wade says he better figure out who’s on which side until he remembers they gave him a list. He asks Cable what he’s doing in the city and Nate says he has a meeting with a guy about a thing. Wade finds his list and goes over a few choices to take down. He says Captain America is too likely to kick his ass and Luke Cage is a possibility but only if he goes back to the yellow silk shirts. He wants to know if there are any big breasted women he can wrestle with or maybe Jackpot and some nubile Young Avengers.
Cable wants to know if they’re really going through with the plan to use superhuman operatives and Wade says it takes a thief to catch a thief. Cable says it takes a politician to make a law that doesn’t work for anyone. Cable wishes him good luck and Wade asks if he’s got to leave. Nate says yes and asks Wade why he never asked him what side he’s on. Wade says he just figured that he was above all of the BS going on. Cable says yes and takes off.
Cable’s meeting is with none other than Steve Rogers, Captain America. He relays the information from Deadpool and Cap wants to know why he’s telling him. He says he wanted him to know what he’s up against and to renew his offer for his group to receive asylum in Providence. Cap says thanks but they aren’t leaving. He says it’d send the wrong message as Cable reveals he knows the secret identities of everyone in Cap’s group. (At this time Cable was using electronic telepathy and it projects from his cybernetic eye like a projector) Cap says it’ll take the feds time to figure it out but Cable says most of their real identities were known already by the government. Cable says all of this is going to turn the country into a totalitarian state and they’ve already lost. We then see a shadowy figure spying on the meeting.
Cap says Stark won’t do that but Cable tells him he isn’t thinking far enough ahead. They finish the meeting and Cable says he’ll do what he can to help them. They part ways and Wade has been the one spying from the shadows. He gets Daredevil’s new identity and he’s now Peyton Cooper an engineer from Long Island. After debating the best way to get there, he decides on a cab.
The next morning and Wade is trailing Daredevil. He follows him to a warehouse in the city and his dialogue is still having trouble as a woman tells him he’s talking to himself. He enters the warehouse and wants to know where the Negative Zone portals and quinjets are stashed. Daredevil attacks from the shadows and asks if an old fashioned billy club will do. Wade tosses a device at him he calls an interspatial distorter but Daredevil says its an Ipod with duct tape. Wade says he was worried for a second as an awesome fight ensues. DD wants to know why he’s doing this since Cable is on their side. Wade tells him he isn’t attached to Cable’s teat. DD wants to know if he thinks the SKRA is right and Wade says he’s never had a secret identity. He says he was military then covert ops and its not who you are it’s what you do. He asks him why he can’t be Cooper Peyton and have everyone know about it.
Daredevil says that won’t make anyone safe because Galactus could still step on their house tomorrow. Daredevil hits him with a knee strike to the head and Wade has a bout of déjà vu. (Called vuja de by Wade) he realizes that Daredevil isn’t even Daredevil as he gets nailed by Cap’s shield. Cap says he’s learned enough as Wade meets up with Cap’s Secret Avengers team of Goliath, Hercules and the ripe, nubile Young Avengers Wiccan, Hulkling & Kate Bishop. Shocked, Wade says its Brett Hendrick, Victor Tegler & Rockwell Dodsworth! (The lame ass Civil War secret identities of Cap’s team) He then says that that Sweet Christmas he’s about to get a whupping.

Fury Thoughts:
I found this in my stash of comics and decided to review the Civil War tie ins for 2 of the Ledger favorites, Cable & Deadpool. This issue is pretty much a solo book for Deadpool since Cable only appears for a few pages. That isn't a bad thing as Wade has his usual share of wisecracks and one-liners but still shows off some of his awesome fighting skills (Pay attention Daniel Way!) in fights with the GLC & "Daredevil".
This is a super fun issue and I'd highly recommend it.
7.5/10
This is a 3-part series and the other 2 issues are forthcoming.
