Spider-man's costume was damaged in a fight with The Lizard (or some other super villain) and he was directed to a costume generator machine by other heroes. He picked the wrong machine by accident, it was in fact, a prison cell for the symbiote designed by its own race; the rest is history.

It wanted to bond with a host forever rather than just suck their adrenaline gland dry and kill them. Its own race deemed it insane and had it locked up for the sake of their genepool's purity.

No, the 1000th in a particular line of symbiotes is always insane, and in this case, Venom was the 998th. Carnage was 999th, and Toxin is the 1000th. That was why Venom and Carnage tried to kill him. |

Carnage is insane due to being spawned in Earth's atmosphere and bonding specifically to blood on a serial killer (the red on Carnage is literally blood, the black is what the symbiote actually is - this also makes Carnage the first symbiote mutant). Toxin's insanity that makes Venom and Carnage shit themselves has not been explained. It's probably something fucking nightmarish and lovecrafitan if it can make Venom and Carnage piss themselves in fear. |
