Writer:Judd Winick
Artist/s:Pablo Raimondi and Jeremy Haun
Date:June 2011- November 2011
I've been itching to do this for a while and this is my first review EVER so try to be nice.
BACKGROUND/SYNOPSIS;
This series chronicles around the life of the second unfortunate robin who was killed by the joker in the 80's and returned rather uncermoniously in 2005 via the most retarded resurrection ever(and that's saying something),We found out that he was apparantely with us all along and as the title says we get to see his hidden/lost adventures ,showing his path from the ex-sidekick to the renegade vigilante.
THE GOOD:
The art was fantastic,both the above mentioned artists can draw a sexy talia,a badass Ra's, and a hunky jason.You can go no wrong with the art here .Also we finally got to see jason's training and an exploration of his personality,his motivation and his feelings towards his mentor and the world in general all which were very well executed.This also hopefully means that we will finally get a consistent portrayal of jason(his wardrobe,personality and even hair has been subject to change,this is ofcourse excluding the genetic mutation he's gone through in the nightwing series).
THE BAD:
Well everything else was bad.There was no plot despite winicks best attempts to make one.It was a character based story which the writer was trying to sell as some epic.The whole angle with the Russians in London was pointless,apparantely jason busts some Russian terrorists one of whom in an attempt to save himself actually gives him jokers location excuse me how would some mook know that jason was after joker and even more worse his goddamn location(winick tries to justify this by making the terrorist assume that jason was a bounty hunter who hunts criminals for cash,)Sorry winick it still does'nt make sense.
The characterizations of both Joker and Talia al ghul were horrible .Winick has arguably written the most pathetic joker in existence,this joker not only became todd's bitch in "under the hood" but also in this series.Jason quite easily captures him,pours some gasoline all over him but refuses to set him ablaze cause he wants to do it in front of batman,this joker was also impressed by some guy who showed him how set fire on water(something which more or less can be accomplished in real life via alkali metals like sodium).
Then the master bungler got his hands on Talia .For those that dont know ,winick wrote talia back in batman annual 25 which was a short version of lost days and she kissed jason at the end of it(dont ask why i'm sure winick does'nt know either),here she was at first a mother figure who wanted to restore jason and then give him back to bruce,then she was kinda like some stupid girl who did'nt know what to do(her own henchman took a dig at her),That same henchman repeatedly questioned her intelligence and she finally told him that the only reason he was alive was cause they're sleeping together the henchman instead of being intimidated just casually started undressing,he disappeared after issue 3 and was forgotten .
Then talia finally sleeps with jason under the pretext that batman killed Ra's and thus she wants jason to punish bruce for that by becoming the crime fighter that bruce was'nt man enough to become,jason then meets hush(in what proved to be the dumbest dialogue/deal between 2 villians).Okay now lets hold that thought Talia had ditched Ra's and started working for Lex around tower of babel storyline,she had no clue of hush,helped both bruce and selina,knew full well that Ra's was alive and also kissed bruce(these events happened in the orignal hush storyline),also later in public enemies she sold lexcorp property to bruce .All in all it made no sense and was just thrust in for some fan service which jason todd fans being the idiots that they are liked. I would also like to question the purpose of jason ,we've already seen the renegade sidekick angle in bucky and the bad son angle in daken,hell we have damian wayne(one of my favourites) around too who is jason todd done right,i recall reading an arc in gotham knights where bruce actually CRIED over jasons death right in front of some unknown child affairs guy,his resurrection and actions literally spit on that.
3/10 .
I'll say it again winick is a HACK.
