Our story opens in present day Egypt with Sin and Baron Zemo. The Baron has apparently tracked down one of the Red Skull’s old bases for her. They both surmise that it’s booby trapped so they teleport in. Arriving inside Sin reminisces that she hasn’t been there since she was 6 years old. Suddenly, they are attacked by a group of now operational Nazi robots. Zemo asks why she didn’t remember them and she says she did but as playmates. They disable the robots and head into a room holding a book with a strange blue leather cover. Sin tells him that the cover is made of the skin of dead Atlanteans and its part of the ritual to make the spells inside work. Zemo is shocked and asks her what exactly is in the book. She tells him it’s the Red Skull’s greatest failure.
We then flashback to Germany in February of 1942. The Red Skull wants to know what’s taking so long as one of his Nazi priests is chanting an incantation. He wants to know if their sacrifices were welcome (the Atlanteans apparently) and his priest says yes. A bolt of lightning streaks across the sky and the priest says their call has been answered. The Skull says the lightning didn’t land but his priest says it will. The Skull is noticeably pissed and wants to know where. He says he’s wasted time but his priest says he can track it down.
The next day and we see Bucky, Captain America and Namor. They’re on the Nazi trail and they uncover what’s been done to the Atlantean sacrifices. Bucky has one of the Nazi priests tied up and Namor roughs him up for some information.
The Nazis’ trail leads them to Antarctica. The Red Skull’s men have found what they’ve been looking for. The Invaders are right on their trail and Namor is ready for some revenge. The Nazis have found a crater and the Skull says they can’t move or even budge the object. He says none of his men are leaving until they’ve solved this problem. Some of his troops have spotted the Invaders when suddenly a large blue demon busts through the ice. He grabs the Invaders plane and easily tosses it aside. Our trio swings into action and the fight is on.
Namor attacks first and the Invaders are caught in a crossfire between the blue skinned demon and the Nazis. Cap & Namor take on the beast while Bucky handles the Nazi soldiers. The Nazis get some air support and the ice is broken beneath the Invaders’ feet. Bucky plunges into the ice with the demon and manages to take it down with a well placed frag grenade. This gives the Nazis the chance to slip away or so they think. Cap says they need to get Bucky out of the cold and they’ll get some other chances to catch the Red Skull.
Aboard the Nazi jet and Baron von Strucker is wondering if that was the object many of his men died for. The Skull tells him they have it but in actuality his priests cast a spell to hide it with their magics. We see the object for the first time and it’s a hammer similar to Thor’s .
Back in present day and Zemo asks Sin why the gods sent the Nazis a hammer. She starts to tell him it wasn’t the gods when she’s interrupted. A failsafe has been activated and the place is crumbling. They get back to the surface and she disables Zemo’s teleported. She then teleports away and leaves him in the desert. She steals his hovercraft and takes off as he says she just made a brand new enemy.
To be continued in Fear Itself #1...
Fury Thoughts:
This issue did a pretty good job of getting me interested in the Fear Itself arc. I'm pretty interested in seeing just who the hammer was from. The art is pretty good and I liked seeing Bucky as Bucky. I'm not a fan of him as Captain America at all.
Overall, I'll give it a 6/10 for setting up the event pretty well.
