X-Men #9Writer: Victor Gischler Artist: Chris Bachalo Inked: Tim Townsend, Wayne Faucher, Jaime Mendoza, Al Vey Color: Chris Bachalo Letterer: VC's Joe Caramagna Cover: Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson This issue is part 3 of the "Serve and Protect" story arc, which is the second arc since this book started at #1. In it we find a small team of X-Men (Wolverine, Emma Frost, Storm and Gambit) teamed-up with Spider Man and investigating some lizard-like creature sightings and disappearances in the sewers of New York. The GoodI like all of the characters involved in this arc and like that Spider Man is working with the X-Men on his turf. I think Gischler writes a good story and I enjoy his dialogue. By now it's obvious that Dr. Curt Conners (The Lizard) is involved in this, but revealed in this issue is who is really pulling the strings behind the scenes. Maybe I should have seen it coming, but it was a surprise to me. The BadI know it's subjective, but I seriously do not like Bachalo's artwork. Not sure how others feel about it, but I much preferred the book when it was drawn by Paco Medina (#1-6, "Curse of the Mutants" arc). Over-all a solid read, but nothing spectacular. If you haven't picked this up and intend to, I'd also recommend picking up #7 and #8 so you will be 100% up to speed on what 's going on. Also, if you enjoy this book and you missed the "Shed" arc in Amazing Spider Man #630-633 (Wells / Bachalo), you should definitely go back and check it out as well. My rating: 5/10

Why are the X-Men in New York?

As part of a Public Relations Initiative in order to help paint the X-Men / Mutant Community in a positive light, Cyclops had Cypher find a law enforcement type task that would be too tough to handle for a local law enforcement agency, but that would be too off-the-radar for the Avengers. This issue of the lizard-like creature sightings and the subsequent disappearances in New York is what popped-up. The X-Men teaming with Spider Man was purely coincidental as he was investigating it himself. This all happened in #7.

So the X-Men are finally starting to hit the streets and act like normal superheroes?

So the X-Men are finally starting to hit the streets and act like normal superheroes? Yes but I believe they are doing so under the ulterior motive of self-promotion. Not that there's anything wrong with that necessarily, but it does factor-in IMO.

Damn, I wish I could stomach the Bachalo art... He's not my least favorite artist, but I don't care for his work either.

Good review, but I'm curious why you gave it a 5 if you only didn't like the art? I guess if it's a big turn off to the experience I can understand the major dive in score, lol.

I probably should've gone 6, but the arc over-all just isn't amazing or anything. That, coupled with what I consider TERRIBLE art is why the low rating. I really liked Captain America #615.1 and I only gave it a 7. That was my first review so I was using it as the base for my other ratings on the other two reviews I wrote. Maybe I should've started higher. In any case, the art really matters to me and affects my enjoyment of a book.

Well they have selflessly saved the entire planet a few dozen times, I think doing something to get some good PR is entirely fine. Hell the good PR is owed to them but you now, bigots.
