He wasn't messing around when he said "I'll be back."
According to Deadline, Arnold Schwarzenegger will return as a lead actor to the Terminator franchise in the fifth installment.
The latest flick about Skynet declaring war on humanity will be directed by Justin Lin (Fast Five). The project is currently fishing for a studio to pick up the deal. However, deadline says that Universal, the studio behind Fast Five, is aiming for the deal, and Lionsgate and Sony are also interested.
Just like many Marvel movie properties (Fantastic Four, X-Men, Daredevil, etc), the rights to The Terminator franchise has a time limit. Original director James Cameron gave his rights to The Hemdale Film Corporation, but the rights will go back to him in 2018. Cameron hasn't been involved with Terminator in quite some time (one can imagine how busy he'll be with the Avatar franchise), but Deadline says a new deal will need to be made with him if there are plans to make Terminator films after 2018. Of course that leaves plenty of time for at least two more movies and the potential to wrap up the saga, but I can also see this franchise having the potential for more stories down the road.
Ledgers, are you guys excited to see the original Terminator back in action? Where do you want to see this fifth movie take place in the franchise's time-line? Also, would you want the Terminator saga to end by 2018 or would you like to see it carry on? Discuss!!!!
