Writer: Fred van Lente
Artist: Jefte Palo
All of the Taskmaster's secrets are revealed here. We find out early on that Tasky has been branded a traitor by the Org. The Org is a criminal organization that's been giving Taskmaster his assignments over the years. They've placed a bounty on his head and the Billion dollar door prize has everyone he's trained in the past gunning for him. Agents of AIM, Hydra, The Secret Empire and others are all looking to collect.
Taskmaster is joined on his world tour by a woman named Mercedes who he met in a diner and helped escape from his first assassination attempt. She's also been targeted by the Org, so they're on the run together. Their trip takes them all over the globe to places that Taskmaster vaguely remembers. We also find out that over the years his memories have been overwritten by the fighting styles hes copied. This hampers his memories, leaving the fighting styles but not much room upstairs for much else.
Taskmaster takes on a boatload of new villains out to get him and we also see him use his photographic reflexes in entertaining ways other than combat. Along the way, he also comes to the Attention of Nick Fury, Steve Rogers and the Secret Avengers. Don't worry, the writer does a fine job of weaving everything together and crafting a new origin for Taskmaster.
Fury Thoughts:
If you're not a fan of retcons then this may not be the book for you. The writer definitely makes some changes to Taskmaster in this series. The art by Palo takes some getting used to. If you read Moon Knight: Down South then you know what I mean. Overall, this is a very entertaining series and I'd recommend it.
