"The Streets Run Red-Ins & Outs"
Part 1 of 3
Writer: Judd Winnick
Artists: Guillem March & Andrei Bressan
If you haven't heard, this issue marks the return of Jason Todd to the Bat-family books. We open up with Bruce & Grayson reminiscing of Jason's earlier years as Robin. We then go to Arkham Asylum where Bruce is having a face to face chat with Jason. Jason is chatty as usual and Bruce is all business. Jason is polite enough to ask how Damian's mom is doing which I think is a little nod to the Red Hood mini-series a few months back. Bruce informs Dick & Damian to keep an eye on him.
This issue details Jason leaving Arkham and being transferred to a regular prison. Needless to say, locking him in with a bunch of convicts doesn't turn out well when they all start dying. The warden also fails to notify Grayson that Jason is being transferred to another prison and you can probably guess what happens next.
This was a pretty fun little issue. The flashback stuff was a nice set up to get new readers up to speed on Jason's mental state. Another thing I liked was Bruce explaining that none of the Bat family members have any type of finger print records which would explain why Jason's true identity was never discovered. The ending was expected but the rescue party are a bunch of guys who I've never seen or heard of.
6.5/10
This issue is a nice setup for Jason's return. I'd recommend it to fans of the character. I'm not an expert on the character, having only read Under The Hood, Jason's earlier appearances in B&R and watching the recent animated movie. I'll definitely pick up the next issue.
