www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/jun/12/pratchett-starts-process-to-end-his-lifeAccording to this, Terry Pratchett plans to end his life through assisted suicide before his illness can get the better of him. Now I don't know how many ledgerites are familiar with Sir Terry's work or know that he's been diagnosed with Alzheimer's three years ago, but for this is a tragedy. I've only read four out of the dozens of books he's written, and those have pretty much been some of the most interesting and enjoyable things I've read, and probably the best fantasy I've read since Tolkien. It's sad to see a man fighting with an incurable disease, and it's even worse when you know he still has so many stories to give to the world. Of course, this doesn't mean it'll happen any time soon, and the article says that 70% of people who sign the forms for assisted suicide don't go through with it, but it really gives you an insight into what Sir Terry is thinking and what is his stance on this.

I can't really comment about assisted suicide itself. I have no moral opposition to it per say. But I'm a firm believer that no matter how sick you are, you should fight to the bitter end.
But I love all of Terry Pratchet's books, soooooo much. They day he will be gone will be one of the saddest in my literary life.

Yeah well what happens when you forget to fight? eh... when you are completely brain dead, you might as well be dead...

Yeah well what happens when you forget to fight? eh... when you are completely brain dead, you might as well be dead... Exactly. Which is I am sure, part of the reason behind his decision. But even before brain death, there is a significant portion where you are conscious but your identity has been completely eradicated.

All I'll really add to this is I'm sad that Terry Pratchet is sick, he's one of my favorite authors and one of the best in the world. He will be missed.

Alzheimer's is a crippling disease. I saw it's effect on my Grandparent's. My Grandma had it, but it effected Grandpa even more the way that she couldn't remember him.
