Marvel's premiere event of the year is here and it's appropriately titled Fear Itself. The main players in this story are Odin, Thor, The Asgardians, the Avengers, Red Skull's daughter Sin and the Serpent, an Asgardian who claims to be the true All-Father of Asgard.
The back story involves Sin traveling to Antarctica and a former Nazi fortress that was built during WW2. The facility is built around a hammer that fell to Earth during WW2. Sin says she dreamed that the hammer was her's. Her advisors tell her that no one has been able to lift it and that included the Red Skull and Hitler himself. She then lifts the hammer and is transformed into a new being of immense power. She then travels to a prison built on the bottom of the Marianas Trench and frees the Serpent. He calls himself the All-Father and claims that he is Odin's brother. He then summons 7 hammers from outer space that crash to Earth. These are to be claimed by the Worthy.
As this is going on, things around the Earth are deteriorating. Stocks are fallen, diseases are running rampant and the world seems to be gripped in terror. Odin has ordered the Asgardians to leave this realm and humiliated Thor in the process. They cross into their former realm and Odin reveals his plan is to destroy the Earth to prevent the Serpent from rising.
The hammers that have fallen to Earth have mentally summoned their owners. Juggernaut, Titania, Absorbing Man, Attuma, The Grey Gargoyle, Hulk and Juggernaut lay claim to them. They all undergo the same transformation as Sin and are transformed into beings of incredible power. They begin razing the planet and the fear that's gripping the world is serving to make the Serpent stronger.
A group of Asgardians team up to free Thor but Odin intervenes. Thor convinces him to return him to Earth so he may battle the Serpent. Back on Earth, there's been a tragedy among the Avengers and one of them has fallen in battle. As Thor confronts the Serpent, it's revealed that an old prophecy predicted their battle. As everything seems to be lost Steve Rogers reclaims his mantle as Captain America. The Serpent dismisses Thor to avoid the prophecy and Thor is in the direct sights of Juggernaut & the Hulk. In Broxton, Oklahoma Tony Stark appeals for an audience with Odin and the All-Father appears before him...
I'll wait until this is finished to rate the series as a whole.
