Hollywood must be in space, because they can't hear the fans screaming. Alien versus Predator is a beyond simple concept that so far not one, but two movies have managed to mess up on a galactic scale. It's about time fans of both franchises were given the fan service they deserve, and the recipe for success is quite simple.
First and foremost, set it in the same time frame as Aliens. We've seen what happens when you force the showdown into a modern day setting, and the result completely pales in comparison to having the legendary creatures face off in a dark, futuristic location. Having the films take place in the modern era and focusing on the Weyland-Yutani company isn't just boring, but it also makes a complete mess out of the continuity. Not only that, but it also awkwardly forces modern people into the fray. Do we really want another movie of explorers, mercenaries, or townies in the bloodbath? Hell no. Since the first time we heard the the beep of a motion sensor, to the sound of a pulse rifle firing, it was clear that space marines belonged in the brutal species deathmatch. And with this time period, they're perfect for the mix.
But how do you generate a plot from there? It's simple and has been done numerous times in the comics, novels and video games. The company has an interest in Xenomorphs and continues to study and experiment on them. So, you have a research facility on a remote planet and marines are there for security purposes. Predators show up for the marines, aliens break out, chaos ensues. Rather simple, yes? There's no need for a forced love story. There's no need to pathetically attempt to develop a bunch of cannon fodder teens and idiots. Films don't need those elements to make us care. Make the marines interesting and we'll want them to survive (depending on what species the viewer is rooting for, of course).
If the movie is called Alien vs Predator, we better get some amazing action sequences between the two and a solid focus on both creatures. Technology has come a long way since both iconic movies made their debut, so there's no reason a one on one battle should look like the two are in bulky outfits and in an old episode of Power Rangers. Also, give us something new to squeal like fanboys (and girls) over. Elaborating on the Predators rituals and briefly showing their home planet was a nice touch, so credit where it's due.
Next, could we please have one of the classic directors (Ridley Scott / James Cameron) return to the franchise? I'm aware James Cameron is likely rather busy with his projects, but seeing his return to the franchise would be well worth the wait. Or, hand the next installment over to the team behind the recent Predators. They did an excellent job breathing new life into the series, as well as paying plenty of respect to the classic films.
Asking for a well-made Alien vs Predator movie shouldn't be too much to ask for. Both creatures are icons in the film industry and there's no reason to let their names continue to be translated to mediocre material. Even if I have to wait another decade for the next film, I won't mind as long as the result is something the fans will finally love. But what do you guys think? Do you agree or disagree with my points? What do you want to see in an AvP movie? Discuss!
