You're in a "Godly Kingdom" and you're spending your time talking about comic books online? Dude... Sexy naked nymphs are feeding me grapes and cherubims are playing the background music while I'm writing this.

Back on topic, I'm not all that surprised Higgins took the cold and badass villain route, as that's the way that Slade has been portrayed ever since he appeared in Geoff's Teen Titans: Child's Play, back in 2003, which practically defined his characterisation and motives ever since (with some refreshing insight to his character by Geoff himself in Titans East, and JT Krul, of all people, during Blackest Night), with most readers forgetting he was practically an anti-hero for pretty much the entire 90s. Now, while I do think Marv Wolfman went a bit too far in making him sympathetic, there was no reason to forgo of his honor and the little nuances that made him the great character we knew until that point, which, sadly seem to be lacking in the DCnU version of the character, as well.

Honestly, I don't get the issue unless people are saying he's trying to make him TOO badass...And if that's the case, where were the complaints when he's been soloing teams and what not? I mean, I've always been under the impression that's who Deathstroke is. A bonafied enhanced badass mercenary. That was made more than clear in this first issue (I assume for potential new readers), and I'm sure we'll have more time to dive into his personality. It's just the first issue, and I had no real problem with him. As a matter of fact, I liked him (well that's cause you'll like anything that looks cool). Shut up, you. Really, he's damn good and takes his work seriously, and it's getting to him he's no longer receiving the respect he deserves. My only issue with this first comic was the bad attempt at humor with the teens, but their conclusion was what really put a smile on the face in the end. It wasn't a great issue, but it was fairly fun and I'm looking forward to it.

I'm not complaining that Higgins is trying to make him too badass - in fact, I think he seems to get Slade and his powers quite well. No, I think he's trying a bit too hard to sell that he's a badass -- there is a distinction between thet two. For instance, I don't need to read a narration caption saying "a major damn badass". I get he's good at what he does when he takes down a platoon by himself in that very page. I don't need the girl to exclaim "holy crap!" at Slade ripping off a steel door (or whatever) on a moving plane. I'm sufficiently impressed on my own. Small things but that bothered me.
Also, my complaints about his characterisation mostly stem off from interviews Higgins has given, as opposed to the issue itself - I agree there's plenty of time to flesh out the character if Higgins so wishes.

Fret not, my Greek friend, that wasn't addressed at anyone in specific. Merely the tone of the overall conversation I've seen on the previous page (no, not the one about Crom living up high and all that jazz).

I felt compelled to reply, since I like talking about Deathstroke, nonetheless.

FRET! NOT!!!
But yeah, some of the panels in that issue were really good. I still stand by the panel of him diving away from the exploding plane looks like a framegrab from a cartoon.

I liked the page where the girl says "what about weapons?" and Slade has a "just shut up" look on his face.

There were a few facial responses from Slade I really enjoyed. The other that comes to mind is when he first meets the team, and there's the narrow panel of him giving a "wtf is going on here?" face.

Yeah, Bennett did a great job. I didn't expect such quality based on the few preview images, honestly.

Agreed.
After next week, I think I'm going to make a "best/worst of the New 52" thread for people to fill out various categories (best art, wrost art, etc)
