After that it moves in to Countdown...which is a let down by 52 standards. However the then Senior VP now Co-Publisher Didio said it was 52 done right. I respectively disagree without, Didio.

I've heard some contrasting views on Countdown, some good and some bad. I'll probably check it out after I'm done with 52 and caught up on Johns' JSA run.

There are some good side Story Arcs from Countdown. Countdown to Mystery & Mystery in Space which I find were better than the main series.
Since you're back tracking, which is what I did. Have you read Countdown to Infinite Crisis? That leads into 4 separate stories that lead into Infinite Crisis.
Countdown to Infinite Crisis > > OMAC > Day of Vengeance (My favourite of the lot) > Villains United > Rahn/Thangar War
>> Infinite Crisis > One Year Later/52

I stopped reading DC for awhile after IC due to burnout. But i am slowly catching up.

I feel like I'm the only person who did not like 52. They made Booster look like a joke and was totally out of character. Coolest part was Black Adam's hissy fit

Did you read all of Booster's story? Yes and I was disappointed for the most part though some parts were not so bad I prefer the Dan Jurgens and Blue and Gold Booster. John's is good but I prefer Jurgens

After that it moves in to Countdown...which is a let down by 52 standards. However the then Senior VP now Co-Publisher Didio said it was 52 done right. I respectively disagree without, Didio. This mostly refers to the fact that Countdown was completely under editorial control, unlike 52. In terms of story quality, 52 was a resounding success. In terms of its editorial mandate, what it was made for in the first place, it was a complete failure. 52 was made to fill in the events of the missing year after IC, but along the way, the writers derailed the story and decided to a completely different story than the one they were supposed to. With Countdown, Editors were basically in charge, and free to mold it as they saw fit. It actually told the story it was supposed to tell. That story was a piece of crap, but I doubt that spoiled DiDio's happiness

Seriously. You can't expect Johns, Waid, Morrison, Giffen and Rucka to tell a 52 issue story as designed by a guy with no writing talent. Throwing in John Osstrander probably didn't help either.

Hmm, I don't remember Ostrander involved, except if you mean the WW3 tie-in, and he only wrote half that.
