Magic can't really be beaten except in some cases (Marvel) by cosmics or abstracts in DC its all Magic or Abstracts.

Magic isn't unbeatable it just is not reliably beatable because of its unreliability. This is why both Doom and Black Panther tend to use their tech rather than their magic despite having ample access to both. There are counters for virtually every superpower in existence but magic I can't provide any reliable counters as the only reliable counter to magic is better magic or sometimes different magic or sometimes willingness to sacrifice part of yourself. Because of the unreliability of counters for magic, it makes it seem like it is unbeatable.

This isn't quite right. Magic doesn't need greater magic to defeat it. It either needs a knowledge of how the magic works or is powered to use that against itself or the opposite source of power or the nature of it or its user(to in effect balance). There are many examples in both companies of lower powered mages defeating much more powerful ones. They almost always done so by either using the more powerful mystics own source of power against them to beat them with their own might or apply the opposite to simply stalemate or negate. Example 1 Kulak was a powerful God who could easily defeat Spectre and Classic Fate in battle. he could destroy worlds from other dimensions just by his presence being near. Sargon was NOWHERE near his league. Yet by using his Ruby of life to influence the Ring of life (sister jewel powered by the same source of Life) he was able to use the power Kulak was against him. That stopped the first attack. To fully defeat him he summoned Dr fate back from being vanquished to face Kulak again. KNowing the the order of Fate's Helmet would reflect the evil/ chaotic nature of Kulak back upon himself through his third eye when he donned the Helm after defeating Fate. Result Kulak is then "Vanquiched. E.g.2 Dr Strange v Shuma-Gorath. Strange merged with a being powered by Shuma's own source to face him in one. match his power with his own. he did simlar things to defeat Dormammu (or just made sure it took a Lot of Dormammu's power to take him on leaving his realm susceptible to other attacks. 3. Fate to defeat the combined powers of an alliance between Order and Chaos, merged with his wife Inza to take on the power of the human spirit that is both ordered and chaotic plus the power of emotion. 4. Almost every time Arion went into battle after expending everything he had to defeat the last threat Atlantis faced. 5. Mr Terrific after a quick explanation of how magic works by the lightning bolt (or one of the imps) was able to come up with a way to defeat the power base of the 5th dimension. I think that's why I like magic so much. You have to be more creative in the ways to beat it. It makes for a more involved story, that just this power vs that power. The character and motivation becomes a BIG part of the power as well. For example often the source of the power used by mystics is the faith, emotions, beliefs of those around them. When a depowered Phantom Stranger fought with just his knowledge of magic against a demon seeking to destroy earth while watched on TV and said he would NEVER lie down to the likes of him, the faith of all viewers gave him back his vast power. When Inza Nelson Fate was against the lord of order who gave her powers to her the belief in her of everyone in her neighborhood gave her powers back to levels above before. Since magic is often drawn by worship or belief or resolution, the act of facing the impossible can give you more power to achieve the impossible.

They need follow buttons on here. That's something I miss from the now defunct DC Boards. you could set up so any thread you replied to was followed or just click to follow a thread. When you wanted to you just clicked on your watches and would have a list of threads you were following with the last date updated (the option to edit the list and remove threads that hadn't been bumped or replied to in ages was also there) . It made it heaps easier to keep up with the threads or topics you had interest in or if follow up arguments were given without cumbersome PM functions. It would be especially handy on a site that is small in users like ours. After all some times you might completely miss a response. Think I'll suggest it in the suggested improvements thread

Follow buttons were suggested for the Ledger but Proboards does not have that functionality unfortunately. It would be incredibly useful though.
But you just illustrated my point, each time the magic wasn't defeated in the same way. How you go about defeating a magic user is not reliable. I listed three ways in which magic is sometimes defeated but there were many more I could have listed and you kindly obliged. A 10 kilowatt shield will be defeated by an 11 kilowatt gun every time but an incredibly adept and powerful mage will not always defeat a less adept, less powerful mage. This to me is unreliable which is why I prefer tech to magic.
Technology can create the same type of drama as a story about magic.

This to me is unreliable which is why I prefer tech to magic. Technology can create the same type of drama as a story about magic. I think you completely missed the point of my statement. Each of those examples was showing the magic being defeated in the sameway. fire with fire (using the power against itself) . The exact same thing that can work in science. Lets put it this way If you have a large fire and want to fight it you can use a small fire to take away the fuel to block it, or water it's opposite to negate it. Just like a positive can cancel a negative. Strange drawing on the power of the darklands against Shuma, Sargon using life against life, Arion drawing on the power of what ever evil god he fought when his own was spent, Fate drawing on both order and chaos to fight order and chaos are all examples of the fire break. The other way (the one that usually means the "stronger mage wins) is the opposite canceling out their counter. This is usually where we see the drive of belief coming in. the greater belief gives you more of you 'polarity" as it were. So you see the way magic is defeated is very much the same way science is. Oh and the greater force/energy doesn't always win. sometimes if you simply apply your smaller force or energy to a smaller more focused area of the larger it will prove to much.

I suppose I misspoke, but what I meant is that you provided another means of defeating a magic user, drawing on the other person's power source not that each individual instance was inherently different.
I'll try to illustrate my point. My Shrunken Teleporting Lobotomy strategy should kill anyone with standard biology but I couldn't tell you if it would work against many Magic Users. Classic Strange and Fate could possibly get KOed by it but I can't in anyway be sure whereas I know it will take down Iron Man or Cyclops
