I have too styles. My polite friendly discussion one and my abrasive condescending one.

Each are used for different specific types of debates.

It really depends on who I am debating and my knowledge on the characters being debated.

If I know a lot on a character and am debating people I feel are deliberately trolling, I can be pretty aggressive, even borderline abusive. I am arrogant and sarcastic. The strategy is to make a user crumble under their own frustration, causing them to go for direct insults, which causes their argument to become bias and eventually they say something that obviously is not true. They then end up reeling at my mastery over them bwa ha ha ha! For a list of examples, see just about any thread with me on comicvine.

If I know a lot on a character and the user I am debating does not, it is usually an educational experience and I am happy to give the lessons, provided they are not pricks and start nitpicking the factual information I am providing. When helping to educate someone on a character, I never inject my own opinion on a character unless I specifically label it as my opinion. So when people try to pull it apart, that can usually cause friction.

If the knowledge is the same and the user I am debating is also knowledgeable, the debates actually go very smoothly with a lot of back and fourth. They often last for pages going over just about every possible variable. The Spider-Woman vs Halo thread here is an example of this style.

When debating someone with a particular advantage over me in terms of character knowledge, I tend to lean on the OP conditions and exploit environmental variables using physics, logic and reason. I also tend to use hypothetical scenarios and ask a lot of questions. I usually win or stalemate these debates by allowing the opposing debater to convince themselves with the answers they give to my questions. It is more of a 'give me an inch and I will give you one too' kind of style.
