Supreme Power #1
Marvel Max
Writer: J. Michael Straczynski
October 2003
Our story opens with a small spacecraft rocketing towards Earth and a couple driving across farmland in middle America. As the couple reaches a clearing the spacecraft crash lands in a corn field. Investigating the crash site the man and woman find a baby inside. To their collective shock the child is completely unharmed and appears to be human. After some prodding from his wife the man agrees to take the baby home and keep him overnight.
Shortly after arriving home with the baby a knock comes on their door. Predictably the government has sent black ops agents to obtain the child and place him in government custody. We then cut to the child being analyzed by a government scientist who explains his unique physical abilities such as unbreakable skin and crushing grip power to President Jimmy Carter. President Carter explains that since the child is an orphan and has no next of kin he is thereby a ward of the United States.
The story then moves to a briefing with the child's soon to be "parents". They are informed that they will be living and raising the child in a controlled government facility. The facility is a small home set in a fenced area with wooded areas and surrounded by a chain link fence topped with razor wire.
The child begins to grow up and is given his name Mark Milton. Mark for the apostle and Milton because its synonymous with middle town America. Raising the child we then see the first sign of his startling powers. Given a puppy for his birthday the dog sniffs his hand and then sensing danger begins to growl. Frightened Mark unleashes a stunning blast of heat vision completely obliterating the animal. Onlookers including his parents and agents watching via security monitors are completely shocked and aghast at what they've seen.
As Mark grows up we're given various news reports of the United States dealings with foreign countries including disputes with China, tensions between Cambodia & Vietnam, the expulsion of the Iranian Shah and the subsequent takeover by the Ayatollah Khomeni. We see Mark being raised in a home school type environment and hear more news reports of tension abroad and the election of President Ronald Reagan.
Fast forward to the early 90s and we see President George Bush Sr, meeting the the officials in charge of investigating the ship that brought Mark to Earth. They have discovered that the ship has unique organic properties and also has a crystal that seems to draw its power from the thoughts of whoever is touching it. They also succeed in seeing the events that led to Mark's ship crashing on Earth. They realize the ship was damaged from attacks by another vessel and theorize that one day these beings may come to Earth.
Finally we get to see Mark have a moment with his adopted father. By this time he's realized the power he possesses and demonstrates his gift of flight to his father. He says they can't keep him in but he'll stay for his mom and dad.
The last part of our story takes us to a conversation between two black women and they are discussing the son of one of the women named Stanley. She describes the childhood trauma he went through in overcoming a childhood sickness. As the women talk Stanley decides to engage his dog in a race. As his Mom comments on the strange thunder on a clear day we see Stanley outracing his dog leaving nothing but a blur behind as he races across a field at subsonic speeds.
8/10 for a great alternate take on Hyperion's origin.
