Writer: Gail Simone
The Writing/Plot
The comic starts off dealing with the Grandson of the Jester being thrown out of his house by his mom and step-dad. He inherits a fortune after watching a tape his grandfather left for him. He later appears in the comic and commits his first time and describes his intentions. I honestly thought that this was a bit odd. I'm not sure why the boy would be so open to being a crime lord, as he had other options. He showed no signs of being sadistic or crazy and yet just has a sudden personality change? I'm not sure I like the character or what Simone is doing with this sub-plot, but I will reserve to much judgment for when she fleshes it out.
Next is the hilarious part of the comic. Bane is being set up on a date by Scandal and Giganta. They meet his date and Bane has some funny lines suggesting how socially awkward he is. This is by far my favorite part the comic. I literally laughed out loud. A jerk then walks up and acts like a douche to Bane's date, he has fallen in love with her, and he just punches the F*** out of him. Everyone's reactions are quite hilarious as well, though the girl in the Harley Quinn outfit was getting on my nerves.
Lastly, we have the Doom Patrol, who I don't know much about, finding one of their members who tried to get some time alone. The Secret Six then attack as they have been payed by someone to take them out, or thats what I gathered. Before the comic ends, it looks like they have a common foe and will be teaming up next issue. I honestly felt a bit unfamiliar with the characters and intended humor, as I didn't know what their personalities were. I felt like I needed to be a follower of their book to get the full effect of the comic.
Overall, Not much happened during this issue. I liked the humor, but everything else was just a bit boring. The fight between the Secret Six and Doom Patrol was okay, but nothing spectacular. I have hopes that the next few issues will be better as this just set things up.
The Art
The art continues to be solid in every way, though I'm glad the regular cover artist will be back next week. I didn't really care for the cover in comparison to the rest of the series. I specifically liked the way a few of the doom patrolers were drawn.
