Secret Avengers 08
Ed Brubaker - Story
Mike Deodato Jr. - Art
Rain Beredo - Colorist
This issue was pretty much off its chops. We have this mysterious John Steele that was America's first true super soldier (seems like there are a lot of first true super soldiers lately) who even had fought alongside Rogers in WWII and is now what seems to be a bad guy. Max Fury, who is a LMD of Nick Fury that has gained sentience and has gone through a few modifications is working with John Steele.
One of my favorite scenes in the issue is that Max Fury clearly has the good sense to be intimidated by Rogers and the idea of revealing themselves to Rogers does not sit well with him.
Shang-Chi is the what they are after, in order to resurrect Shang-Chi's father. So they stage an attack in Hong Kong to draw the SA out. Rogers takes his team in and cleans house rather easily but Max and John take over Roger's base.
Agent 13 has her moment and to her credit, gets one hit in on Max Fury. Beast is a house of cards though so I bet there is one Beast fan I know that will eat his hat over it.
What comes next is Rogers going through a roid rage. I personally have never seen Rogers threaten anyone with death but I felt that it was within his character based on what was going on.
I love great hooks for the next issue and I felt like this issue delivered. I really need to know what happens next issue.
The art was fantastic but that should be no surprise since it is Deodato. The man knows how to render heavy shadows, facial expressions and action. The story was well written and it ended in a great spot to have suckers like me bucking for the next issue.
Overall I got to give this a 10 out of 10. I seriously found no flaws in it and it has plenty of action and a bit of espionage.
