Story
There story is about a boy named Simon who was in prime condition to do many things in his life, but during a basketball game his legs gave way. The doctor told him he multiple sclerosis which breaks the link between the brain and random motor functions. He doesn’t have an easier life for a kid of his situation. Bullies still taunt him. His best friend Chris; was one of the friends that stayed with him during his ordeal. They go to the cinema to watch a superhero film named Superior, and this is a person who Simon looks up to because he sees a difference in his character that many other heroes like Wolverine who are willing to kill. Later during the night a monkey, named Ormon appears on his bed, but they are actually in space millions of miles away from Earth. This monkey gives a proposition for Simon. Ormon explains that out of six billion people Simon was deemed most appropriate for a magical wish. He then turned into his hero, Superior.
Thoughts
A magical wish which transforms you into a superhero. Where have I heard that before? Oh, that's right one of my own favourite heroes, Captain Marvel. Billy's hero was Superman. And Superior had a lot of similarities in power and personality to Superman without actually saying his name.
It will be classed as another Superman rip-off. But because this is Mark Miller, people will buy it because of his name and the people reading it are probably the ones who want a "darker" Superman.
However I will probably continue reading it, because what I have said early, it's Mark Miller. I would like to see where he goes with this. And this probably would have been the direction he would have taken Superman if he was allowed to write him on a continuous bases.
The Good
Lu's artwork, I've enjoyed since reading Superman: Birthright. It stands out from a lot of other artwork. This maybe the reason why Mark wanted him for this title for the Millerworld.
A big thing for me, which would be a small thing to others maybe. Is the lettering. I'm a big fan of sentence style lettering. Another example would be Brian K. Vaughan's Runaways. To me it's easier to read. Because I always see it that when it's all capitals, if feels like they're shouting.
The Bad
To show some action in the story, they have the character go to the cinema to watch Superior on the big screen. Seems as they knew no real action was going to take place in an Superhero-Action comic so they conjured up a film scene. I also felt this was a hint of what's to come and I think everyone who knows Miller's comics. They usually get turned into a film.
There is only a small portion of the comic that shows Simon's character. Showing you that he can't walk, and that he has some guts to stand up to bullies. And his situation in his world. The film scene took a lot of what could have been to show some of the characters that will take place in the story.
Rating
5.5/10
I'll review the rest of them until my interests in the comic stops
