One month AFTER the meteor.
“Uh…my head hurts” Maya said lying in her hospital bed, with an gauze wrapped around her forehead. The world was still feeling the effects of the meteor that plunged into the Earth; most cities were still trying to rebuild after the massive destruction the almost apocalyptic event caused. Even with the death and destruction; the real problem seemed to be a developing biological one. Maya’s eyes quickly surveyed the surrounding room and she noticed she was in an isolated room with a barrage of nurse, glancing through the windows. “Why am I in here?” She said rolling out of bed, ripping all the attachments from her body. Many of the Doctors stormed in the room trying to keep her under wraps. They was able to stabilize her; knocking her out and strapping her down on the table awaiting the arrival of maya’s mother.
Placing on her sunglasses, she shift into gear and then sped off west towards the Grand Canyon. The pitter patter of the rain soon became soothing; however it was broken by the sound of her cell phone ringing.”Hello this is Gwen?” she said while steering.
“”Hey Gwen its Steve!” Gwen hit a button on her car, so that he could be heard on the car’s speakers instead of the phone.
“What is it Steve?” She said turning into a huge rest stop so that she could talk with a clear mind.
“Your daughter just woke up not too long ago; her brain waves are mutating fast it’s almost like they’re thinking about things that aren’t even on the spectrum yet…Gwen? ”. Gwen dropped back in her seat; she had worked rigorously for the last three weeks trying to find some way to make Maya better; all the while watching people with the same exact radiation poison die. As she wiped the tear that was streamlining down her fact she placed the phone back to her ears.
“Yeah well I haven’t exactly gotten any DNA scans, I’ve been too busy working at the Asylum” Gwen ran her fingers across her head. “The only thing I have is folders from various people in the city, all people who are stable but mutated somehow…”.
“Mutated…how?” Steve replied curiously. “There was one…who had…blades for hands…” Gwen said sounding as if she were at a loss of breath.
“Well did you record what the individuals can actually do?” Gwen put Steve on mute and then reached into the back seat looking for her folders. Removing him from mute she looked through the files.
“Yep, they give detailed descriptions” She said flipping through the files. “Good I’ll see you when you get here”.
Ending the call Gwen drove until she was stopped by the Canyon guards. “It’s Gwen, let her through” the front guard said, as she exited her vehicle and went into the toll booth thing. Looking into a scanner, the booth began to move down, eventually the sun burnt rock of the canyon turned into glass, and a gigantic metropolis appeared.
“It’s amazing what a couple of trillion dollars can get you now-a-days huh?” she said to the gate guard whose’s eyes were bulging from the site. Too bad though he had to have his memory erased every time he went down.
Exiting the elevator, she took a transport to the massive research center on the far side of the city. “Alright...Show me what we got”. She said entering a room, with a dozen scientists and Maya being contained in a chamber.
“ABSOLUTLY NOT!” Gwen screamed at the top of her lungs seeing her child encased, in the chamber. However her assistant quickly stepped up.
“Please, she has the radiation poison; we heard that Solar cells would cause the immune system to strengthen, PLEASE THIS IS OUR ONLY SHOT” Gwen touched Steve’s shoulder and then gave off a huge sigh. “This is the first time we’ve done this…there is a chance she might not live” Gwen looked at both Assistants with sorrow in her eyes however, she finally agreed. The images of the Sword hands seemingly scared her.
“Ok...Steve, you better hope she survives, if not I’m going to beat you with her corpse, Start with something, small Try it” Steve pushed up on the activating sequence, and the huge machine started churning. The results of this test run would either be one the biggest scientific breakthrough, or just a horrible lost. The machine revved up, and the girl disappeared into chamber of light. Gwen and Steve continued to glance at the light hoping that when the Glare subsided there would be a cured little girl inside the chamber.
When the light subsided Maya’s eyes met with her mother’s and saw a single tear cascade down her cheeks. “Her…Brain Waves are still abnormal…but they aren’t erratic like previously, stated”. Gwen smiled, motioning for her second assistant to let Maya out. “I just wish the rest of the world could be this estatic” she said looking at the News Coverage of the event.
