Hello again. After a too long while without more, I'm finally back with a new article.
The Scorpion:
Publisher: Dargaud
Type/Genre: Swashbuckling Adventure/Alternate History
Original Language: French
Writer: Stephen Desberg
Artist: Enrico Marini
Description: In 18th Century Italy, there is a man going by the nickname of the Scorpion. He is a trafficker in religious relics, a rogue, a master swordsman, a womanizer and a rebel. This Man lives for the simple pleasures of the day. Good drink, good food and most of all. Good women. That is, this was how he lived for most, because it drowned out the doubts and about his past that haunt him, as well as his apparent curse from birth. Then for no reason he could fathom, Tribaldi, the bishop in charge of the Inquisition sends an assassin to kill him and bring back his birth mark as proof of the deed. What this begins is a grand, journey amongst the conspiracies of Europes. The Shadow struggles behind the halls of power, the Secrets of the Church. And one man discovering who he is.
So far the following tomes have been published:
Tome 1: the Devil's mark
Tome 2: The Secret of the Pope
Tome 3: The Iron Cross
Tome 4: the Demon of the Vatican
Tome 5: The Sacred Valley
Tome 6: The Treasure of the Temple
Tome 7: In the name of the Father
Tome 8: The shadow of the Angel
Tome 9: The mask of Truth
What makes this a good series?: If you like Swashbuckling adventure, with swords and capes, duels, corrupt churchmen and beautiful renaissance Italy. This is the series for you. The story itself is engrossing, balancing very well high action, tension, personal reflection and emotion, mystery. It uses the concept of a secret history to Europe and a great conspiracy behind the scenes of power. The characters are all very interesting and well developed, with good twists and turns.
The art itself is very good with a very enchanting attention given to the details of the costumes for accuracy that really helps making the series good. Marini is a very good artist and his talent improves as the books progress. And damn he draws people well. Their physiques are very real, proportions, movement and style. I can't say Marini is my favorite artist but that's because some issues of lighting could stand some improvement. But everything else is very well done.
Can I even get this in the U.S: Dargaud ships online world wide. And Dark Horse has an english translation. So absolutely!
Final Verdict:
Art: 3.8 out of 5
Story: 4/5
