Kick Ass returns, but can it live up to the hype it has generated? Mark Millar's first volume was a huge hit, and the movie brought even more attention to the hilarious, vulgar and brutally violent comic. So, does Kick Ass 2 bring us more of what we love, or does it just feel bland and played out at this point? Thankfully, it still kicks ass.
I'll avoid spoilers, just in case someone (for some reason beyond me) hasn't read the first volume yet. The story picks up shortly after where we left off, and quickly catches us up to pace. We've seen Kick Ass stumble around as a hero, and now Mindy is teaching him how to step up his game... And man, does it work! Right in the very first issue we have a brutal and jaw-droppingly awesome display of just how much Kick Ass has improved. Red Mist is mentioned, and we get to see a slew of whole new heroes. I think you'll all find it hard NOT to love Dr. Gravity. Just like the first volume, Millar gives us a preview of what's to come in the end, well before we get there, and from what he's shown, it looks like it's going to be one hell of a ride.
Romite Jr's work is perfect for the series. You can almost feel the violent impact of every strike, but his slightly cartoonish style also fits the universe perfectly, meshing extremely well with the comedic but serious story of "What if we all actually tried to be heroes?"
Mark Millar, as usual, shows us his A game. The dialogue is every bit as vulgar as the first, there are plenty of hilarious pop culture references, and we get a clear display of each character's personalities. As for the overall story, it flows smoothly and before you know it, you'll be done with the first issue and wondering what happens next.
All in all, I'm extremely pleased to say Kick Ass 2 was a fun read and I'll definitely be picking up the second issue.
