This is question. I've noticed that mostly Eurocentric cosmogony is used to create heroes for comics however there are a number of other places with a richer mythological and spiritual history to draw from but instead of using those, they rehash the same stuff over and over again (Hercules is everywhere, Thor is also in a couple of places.)
Any thoughts as to why?

because Europeans are pretty spread out over the world hence they take their cultural background with them to places like america although i cant speak for other continents.

Cosmogony is actually science, not religion. Religion has sprung forth from cosmogony though.

More or less What Castle said. Writers write what they and the audience) know about, and just about everyone knows about the classical and norse mythologies. Chirstian too.

I recommend a title change. Maybe Mythology and Comics. Or Pantheons and comics.

There is also a lot of Japanese mythology out there. Like Raiden from Mortal Kombat, is based off, Raijin, the Japanese 'God of Thunder'.

Actually there are more non europeans spread over the world. And Not everyone knows Norse classics as a matter of fact I didn't know anything about them until comics. And I can name a number of people who didn't either.

Amatsu-Mikaboshi is also the main villain in the recent Hercules volume and Chaos War crossover.
Though I still can't figure out if they were true to the mythological character or completely messed him up...

Most of the world has heritage from European countries. That's how the knowledge of these mythologies travel. Through family lineage. China doesn't count because there is a billion of them.
Most of my friends know of Norse mythology. And my heritage is Norwegian.

Ask your self how many of those are known to the targeted demographics. How many what are known? Non-European mythologies. Should have made that clearer I guess.

Hercules Myth was spread across the world due to the Roman empire and he became popular *shoulder shrug* ppl liked him.

Guarantee to find an Englishwomen/men somewhere. We get around. A mate of mine went to Bolivia, went into a bar, wanted to talk to one of the locals. Found and Englishmen.
