Writer: Brian Azzarello Artist: Eduardo Risso Editor: Eddie Berganza Rating: 9/10 This was a very good issue, but perhaps I overestimated the unpredictabiility of it. After all, a poster on this forum (can't remember who) already correctly identified Joker's identity a couple of weeks back. In case you're not caught up with Flashpoint: Thomas Wayne is Batman. Bruce was killed in the same scenario in which Thomas was in mainstream continuity. The Penguin is Thomas' right hand man for the casino. Make no mistake about it, Azzarello is damn awesome at crafting dark Batman arcs. He can combine action/suspense and comic relief (although there's not a whole lot of it in this issue) with the smoothest of transitions. Nothing about his writing is forced, and I was very impressed with that I saw from Risso's art. Honestly, you don't really have to pick up the first issue to get caught up with this one. I highly recommend that one as well, though.

This book was pretty dang good.
You should read 100 Bullets if you liked it. It's the same theme and it's also very dark and intelligent.

I've been meaning to pick up the Joker graphic novel by him for a while now. I've read maybe 10 Vertigo issues in my life, but with how well-received it's been, I'll probably end up picking up the First Shot, Last Call collection. One of my friends keeps telling me how badass this Cole Burns guy is, so I'll keep an eye out of for him in particular. I've seen a couple of panels from the series, and my opinion has stayed the same about Risso since: he's a special talent.

Cole doesn't show up until the 2nd trade but he's probably my favorite character from the series. Him or Victor Ray, the guy in my avatar.
Azerello's Joker is okay. I mean, it's better than your average comic but it's the worst of his books.

So does anyone recall who predicted _____ as Joker? I do remember somebody catching on to that immediately.

I didn't call it. I reread the story after learning it.
I just assumed Joker was Joker.
