story DAVID BAXTER, art JAVIER ARANDA, GARRY LEACH & JESSICA KHOLINE OF IMAGINARY FRIENDS STUDIOS, cover TOMM COKER
This story is set about 60 years in the future. After a massive recession the United States has gone through a civil war and many of the remaining cities have splintered into a series of isolated city-states. One of the cities that arose is New San Diego and it was founded and rebuilt by a group of Navy Seals and scientists. Heavily dependent on technology the group that protects the city uses Olympic God references as code names and call themselves the Marksmen.
Drake, a member of the Marksmen is on a mission into what used to be Arizona to recover some laser technology. He's ambushed by a group of cannibals. finding himself in grave danger he's rescued by a group of people. They reveal they hail from Lone Star, a city that the residents of NSD wasn't sure if it really existed or not. Their leader Joe Percival, informs Drake that the citizens of Lone Star have been brought together by a man called the Duke.
He's brought them under his umbrella by preaching an anti-technology religious based message. Percival also reveals that The Duke and his army are on their way to NSD to attack the city and steal the laser technology.
Thoughts:
This issue is only a $1 and worth the price. This is your basic futuristic story and reminds me a little bit of the movie Book of Eli. It's not a bad story but I'm not sure if it really grabbed my interest enough to keep reading it. The art is pretty nice and if you're into the genre then I'd suggest giving it a try.
5/10 This is average at best I'm afraid.
