Netherworld #1 & #2
Written by: Bryan Edward Hill & Rob Levin
Ray Parker is a bounty hunter in an unnamed sprawling metropolis. He's got his own share of problems like drug abuse but all in all is still a man with moral character. He's good at what he does and seems to be genuinely focused on cleaning up the streets.
His life takes a drastic turn when he's approached by two people. One is a beautiful woman named Alexis and the other is a man working for a druglord named Cyrus Kane. They both want him to track down a girl named Madeline but they don't offer any real details as to why she's so important.
Ray keeps an eye on the girl at a local club and follows her into an alley. She's approached by a gang of muggers and Ray has no trouble taking them down. However, its not quite as easy as he thinks. One of the muggers transforms into a strange looking almost were-like creature.
Ray manages to escape with her and they make their way to where Alexis and her people are hiding out. Alexis explains that the world they live in is actually purgatory. She tells Ray that all of them are dead and have no prior memories of their previous lives. She says that Madeline is a special gate that can get all of them back to Heaven and that's why Kane wants her....
Thoughts:
This was pretty entertaining. I wasn't expecting the twist with Madeline and her importance to the story. I'm interested in seeing where this goes. The art work falls off from the first issue to the second. It isn't your typical comic with a lack of costumed heroes and villains but still enjoyable. It's a limited series but you shouldn't have any trouble finding the first 2 issues. The cast of characters is pretty clear cut and easy to follow. I'd recommend this.
