Angel Beats!
A Anime that actually gets me thinking about things always gets props in my book. Even if the thinking was around halfway through the series with some of the revelations involving the characters.
So Angel Beats gets a thread. You can't fight me on this ledgers.
Story:
Yuzuru Otonashi is dead.
Otonashi wakes up, with no memory of his past, next to our favored heroine, Haruhi Suzu.... Wait... I meant Yuri Nakamura. She is the leader and founder of the SSS (If you can't tell by now, Jun Maeda seems to be a fan of Nagaru Tanigawa's work lol.) Shinda Sekai Sensen, whose goal is to provoke God, defeat Angel and not be obliterated. After briefly being told by Yuri that he is dead and the young girl in the field is Angel, their enemy, she asks him to join even as she has Angel in her sights:
Of-course our hero thinks these people are hopping mad, goes down to Angel:
Otonashi: Um...Good evening. Um...Someone's aiming a gun at you. They said you were an angel or something...
Kanade Tachibana: I'm not an angel.
Otonashi: I thought so. Then-
Kanade Tachibana: I'm the student council President
Otonashi: I'm an idiot. That girl was making fun of me. Dammit. I don't even know who I am...I guess I'll go to a hospital.
Kanade Tachibana: There are no hospitals here.
Otonashi: Huh? Why not?
Kanade: People don't get sick here.
Otonashi: Don't get sick?
Kanade: Because everyone's dead.
Otonashi:Huh? I get it now! You're in on this too! You're trying to trick me! So this amnesia is your doing too?
Kanade: Memory loss is quite common when people come here. When you die in an accident, your head gets damaged, after all.
Otonashi: Then prove it! If I'm dead right now I can't die agai...
Kanade: Hand sonic. *STAB*
Normally this would be the part where Otonashi dies. He does not and after a subsequent thrashing by another SSS member and waking up in a pool of his own blood, he finally figures out Yuri wasn't trying to trick him, that he is indeed dead, cannot die and is now in the afterlife. Otonashi from here out joins the SSS, doing what he can to avoid obliteration and fight Angel.
Although later happenings reveal this school to be a sort purgatory for younger individuals that lived tragic lives that were cut short(Everyone in the cast has their sad story to tell to be sure, even if all of them don't get to tell it) and makes it his mission to help them and Angel.
This will lead to a lot of laughs, some downright depressing back stories, reveals of Otonashi's own past and subsequent end of the story within 13 episodes.
All view-able on Netflix atm, so enjoy. Might even prompt you to do something nice that you normally wouldn't have ever thought of doing(Otonashi's full back story will give you a hint at what I'm talking about). Now watch it. =P
