This trade collects JLA #55-60 (1997 Volume)
Issues #55-58 are Terror Incognita. Issues #59 & #60 are standalone stories involving Doctor Polaris and a Christmas issue.
Terror Incognita
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Bryan Hitch
Features:
Superman, Wonder Woman, Plastic Man, Batman, Martian Manhunter, Kyle Rayner & Wally West
This issue kicks off with some stunning events. In Gotham City, Batman is saving a woman when Nightwing cuts his Bat-rope. In Metropolis, Lois Lane rips open Clark Kent's shirt in the Daily Planet office to reveal the Superman logo. In Russia, a group of angry citizens detonate some nuclear devices that's only stopped by Flash, Wonder Woman & Green Lantern. The unseen enemies manipulating them are a group of adversaries they're all too familiar with.
Only then does the JLA discover that it's a secret plot by the recently escaped White Martians. It's all they can do to stand up to these awesome telepaths who each have the abilities of Martian Manhunter. The White Martians have enacted a plan that prevents fire from being utilized in Earth's atmosphere taking away their only weakness. Their devious plan is also slowly causing Earth's plants and inhabitants to slowly suffocate. The League does what they can but even they can't measure up to the power of their enemies. Only through a cunning plan do they save the day and defeat their opponents.
Thoughts:
Waid portrays the White Martians as nearly unbeatable. For a JLA team at this power levels that's really saying something. It really takes every bit of strategy and planning the JLA has to take them down. The art by Hitch is pretty good but not quite as good as some of his most recent work. This is some good stuff with all of the major characters getting equal amounts of face time.
