This trade recollects issues #0-5 of the second volume of the Authority. It features Apollo, Midnighter, Jack Hawksmoor, Swift, Jenny Sparks, The Engineer & the Doctor. There are three separate stories in this trade.
Issue #0-High Stakes
This issue opens up with the team tackling an invading force. Apollo uses his awesome interrogation skills i.e. using his heat vision on a guy's testicles to get some answers. It turns out the invading force work for a huge interdimensional organization called Viceworld that is basically Las Vegas on board a space station. The bet this time is that their invasion force can wipe out the Authority's Earth and it allows it's customer to place wagers for or against the Authority. Needless to say the Authority gets the job done, kills the boss lady behind the entire operation, shoves a nuke into their HQ and gives its customers 3 minutes to escape.
3/5 This is a pretty good introduction to the team if you're not familiar with them Each team member gets a pretty decent amount of face time and they get to show off their own special skills and abilities.
Issues #1-5 Reality Incorporated
The Authority takes on another interdimensional threat in this arc. This time it's a group that goes from reality to reality conquering worlds. They launch an assault on the Authority's ship the Carrier and individual attacks on the Authority members themselves. Their leader is Wade Walker, a man from the 1930s Earth era who was possessed by one of the Voyagers, a sentient race of beings who travel the universe and bond with lower level beings. This one has some fun art as many of Walker's minions morph into alien/human hybrids so it's basically Midnighter vs Aliens for a few panels.
3.5/5
This is a pretty nice arc but I felt like they could have tied it into the opening issue somehow. That's just a minor complaint and doesn't really take much away from the story.
Issue #5 Behemoth
This is the final issue of the trade and a stand alone story. it's pretty simple as the team is taking on a huge monster that's threatening to destroy a major city. Not much to say about this as it's one of my least favorite story types in comics. The giant monster destroying the city idea was stale in the 1960s and it's stale as 3 day old bread here.
2/5 This is a boring story and it has some of the worst art I've seen in a comic in quite a while.
OVERALL
Overall, this is a decent intro to the team and what its all about. It's a little more risque than your typical American comic with the language but not as shocking as I expected. I like the team's dynamic and what each member brings to the team. I enjoyed it and it did catch my interest in reading some more stuff with the Authority.
