"What Price Tomorrow?"
Scripts & Breakdowns: George Perez
Pencils & Inks: Jesus Merino
The Story:
The first modern tale of the new DCnU Superman begins here. Right off the bat we see some changes to the Man of Steel's world. The Daily Planet is in the midst of some wholesale changes as it's been bought out by a rival company. We see how Clark Kent feels about this as he lacks faith in the new company's business practices and disagrees with their methods of obtaining the news. Lois Lane (who's no longer married to Clark) has been given a high end position with the new company by her new boss Morgan Edge.
For the action in the issue, we see Superman taking on a huge flame monster. It has some ties to Krypton as Superman discovers it's actually using a Kryptonian dialect. New readers get to see a combination of the power, speed and other abilities that make Superman one of the Dc universe's top powerhouses. We also get an almost sarcastic, humorous Superman at times in the issue.
4/5
The Art:
It's very good and the new costume is growing on me. Most of this issue takes place at night so it's a bit darker than typical stories taking place in Metropolis. Perez and Merino's work here is a good beginning for this series.
3.5/5
Overall:
I liked this issue a good deal. I'm not a huge Superman fan but it was a nice start to the series. We get some developments with both sides of Superman's character and plenty to build the rest of the series on with other characters as well. The fire monster was a little less than stellar but Perez managed to make it interesting.
No complaints from me on this one.
