Greetings fellow Ledgerites, on this the anniversary of this Celtic God's birth. I have decided to use my awesome powers over time and space and to travel to the prehistory age of the 90's to bring you an over view of something awesome.
So here I present:
The Arthur Cycle
Series Name: Arthur: A Celtic Odyssey
Type: Mythological Odyssey/Heroic Fantasy/Legend
Publisher: Delcourt
Writer: David Chauvel
Artists: Jérôme LERECULEY and Jean-Luc SIMON
Description:Times were difficult for the Isle and it's people of Britain, who called themselves the Kymry. From all sides they were besieged by enemies the Loegrians, the Picts, the Scots and the Gaels. They sought the lands of the Kymry and wanted nothing more then to loot and pillage it. In their hearts the Kymry called for a man capable of standing up to the invaders, a man capable of bringing back the time where they were the only masters of their beloved island. This warrior would be born soon, and with him would come marvelous times that would mark memory for eternity before it would be gone forever.
This series has the following tomes, from start to finish:
-Tome 1: Myrddin the mad
-Tome 2: Arthur the Fighter
-Tome 3: Gwalchemei the hero
-Tome 4: Kulhwch and Olwen
-Tome 5: Drystan and Esyllt
-Tome 6: Gereint and Enid
-Tome 7: Peredur the naive
-Tome 8: Gwenhwyfar the Warrior
-Tome 9: Medrawt the Traitor
What makes this a good series: Accuracy and attention to data. This series was born as an attempt by the writer to find the sources of Arthurian legend and present them in an intergrated format. He even goes as far that in the last tome (tome 9) he actually has an index with his research sources. This isn't the polite courtly and chivalric Arthurian legend by authors like Mallory and Chretien de Troyes. This is the violent, barbaric pre-christian incarnation of the Arthurian myth where Arthur is a battle hungry warrior splitting skulls then drinking mead from said skulls. This is the Arthurian myth where Guinevere is Gwenhwyfar the half-naked bezerking warrior-witch pictish princess who kicks ass, castrates men not manly enough with a rusted axe. If anyone wants a primer on Celtic legendry, their lifestyle and how earlier myths were constructed, this is the series you want. This series is also a breeze to read since it only has nine tomes and the stories are easy to follow. Plus everything in there is badass, heck this Arthur if he saw fucking Conan the Cimmerian in action would just chuckle then say: "Alright kid, now step back and let me show you how a real man does it...". I'm not joking, this series is that badass.
Can I get this in the U.S?: Yes, Amazon.fr is your friend thought this is another series only available in French. So get cracking on learning the language of Moliere if you want to read about real men boys
Final Verdict:
Story: 4/5
Art: 3/5 (very much the weakest aspect of the series)
