I'll update this as issues are released. This is the newly launched series by Nick Spencer & Paco Medina.
Ultimate X-Men #1 & #2
The Story
The X-Men are back in the Ultimate Universe! Well, sort of. The mutants of the UU are a fractured group these days. Some are living in what basically amounts to prison camps, others are actually being held as prisoners and tortured while a few of the remaining ones have banded together in small groups.
There are new threats to mutants as well. If they refuse to submit to authorities then lethal force can be used against them. We see this right off as Rogue is attacked by a group of Nimrods. There's also the looming threat of the UU version of William Stryker to worry about. He makes his presence felt immediately by capturing Jimmy Hudson and savagely murdering a woman that aided a group of mutants during Ultimatum.
Jean Grey is also back and attempting to assist her fellow mutants in much the same fashion as Professor Xavier. Her first recorded case doesn't go nearly as well as she hoped though. Kitty Pryde has teamed up with the Human Torch and Iceman, the best friends of her deceased boyfriend Peter Parker. They barely escape with their lives when they give Rogue a helping hand.
Another prominent return is that of Pietro Maximoff, Quicksilver. His motives are as of yet unknown but he seems to have something sinister planned by assisting the government and Nick Fury.
Grade: 3.5/5
The Art
Paco Medina isn't a great artist but his style fits this series well. You may be familiar with his previous work on the X-Men vampire arc. He's definitely a fun artist and the colors are very nice.
Grade: 3.5/5
Final Score:
7/10
This feels like the original series and that's a good thing. The mutants of the UU are on the run and I much prefer them as the outlaws than how they've been portrayed in the 616 universe. I'll definitely keep up with this series to see how it plays out.
Very good!
