Let me just get this out of the way: The art is pretty good, and it fits the tone of the series.
I love Deathstroke. I really do. And the new costume doesn't look as stupid as I thought it would. And while I am pissed that Rose has been retconned from the Wilson family tree, that doesn't really affect this series.
But my biggest problem with this particular series: WHERE. IS. THE. STORY?!
Maybe it's me. Maybe this is a series worthy of Moore, Morrison, or Gaiman and I'm just not seeing it. But... come on, now. I get that the first issue is typically action packed to get the reader interested. Fine. But can we finally start advancing the plot now? It seems that every single page of this series is dedicated to making Slade look badass (and doing a fine job of it, I might add). This entire issue was nothing but Deathstroke ripping through swarms of enemies for no real reason. It doesn't advance the plot. We know just as much about the briefcase and the enemies here as we did in the first issue. All we did was establish that Slade is awesome and not to be mess with - but, then, we knew that after the first two pages of the first issue.
And something else that's bothering me: what happened to Wintergreen? What, you can just pretend the entire incident involving Rose never happened, but Wintergreen's death is permanent? Death is never permanent unless your name is Thomas and Martha Wayne or Uncle Ben. Of all things that can be retconned and changed, death is the easiest. I would certainly prefer him to this "Christoph" guy.
It's certainly an enjoyable read. But it's not exactly deep in its storytelling - unless there is a profound meaning to the arrangement of severed heads or the shape of the smoke clouds that I'm missing.
This issue gets a 7.8 from me.
