Emmy-winning HBO helmer ("Game of Thrones") joins Marvel's sequelAfter losing director Patty Jenkins earlier this month over creative differences, Marvel Studios have decided upon a replacement for their sequel Thor 2, and according to Deadine, it's Alan Taylor, the director who has mainly been helming television shows for HBO like "Game of Thrones," "Boardwalk Empire" and "The Sopranos" (for which he won an Emmy) with a resumé that goes back to "Oz."
In fact, his last feature film was nearly 16 years ago, when he directed the indie Palookaville. With a director accusomted to working fast, the film is back on track for its November 15, 2013 release date, working from the script co-written by Don Payne.

I have never seen anything from him but I recognize some of his more popular works.

He directed one of my friends favourite episodes of Lost. Game of Thrones will be a big name on his CV for this type of film.

Yeah I know a few people on this site where completely in love with the show GoT so if he is as good as I am led to believe, this should be very good news.

Better than having a female with no real experience within anything that Thor has to offer.

I checked him out on IMDB, and I don't recognize a single one of his films.
Still, "In Marvel Studios We Trust"... so I'm ok with this choice.

Alan Taylor has directed episodes of and been involved with Game of Thrones, Lost, Boardwalk Empire, and The Sopranos.
I am admittedly feeling much safer with Alan Taylor than Patty Jenkins, but only time will tell. I just think Marvel needs to step out of the box a bit with Thor 2 and really just let loose. Thor felt a bit restrained to me.

I don't really have an opinion on this hire as I've never seen anything this guy has directed. I will say that I trust Marvel Studios until they give me a reason not to though.

Yeah I know a few people on this site where completely in love with the show GoT The show pales in comparison to the book, so if that's the product of his work, then it won't be a masterpiece.

Books are almost always far better than a take in a different medium like tv or movie because it's a book. In this case, GRRM has over 1000 pages to develop and describe his story and characters , where as a director has 10 hours in the season.
But they have done a fantastic job and it is a fantastic show. Just because it may not be as great as the books, doesnt mean they aren't great, high quality, finely made pieces of cinematic work, which they are. The show is loved and praised by many fans and critics alike. Its your opinion, but don't try to pass off his work on the show as sub par when it is basically the peak of dramatic television right now.
