The Ray
Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti introduce a new character to the DCnU, Lucien Gates. Lucien is a Korean/American lifeguard from California. It’s not said whether or not he has any link to the previous mantles of the Ray. Or does it show any signs that they exist in the DCnU. It seems very unlikely that he would be linked to the previous mantles because of how Lucian came to be the Ray.
One quarter of the issue revolves around him getting his powers and adjusting to them, meeting his family, friends…and girlfriend. Another quarter is him battling giant monsters. And the final quarter is about an explorer who will be seen in future issues.
Lucien is introduced as a laid back type of character always up for a good time. Even after the events that led him to become the Ray in the first place he still very relaxed like it happens every day. After he learns how to revert to his normal form, he appears naked and hides his private parts, but still seems comfortable standing there talking over the phone (he borrowed) to his friends. He also, after getting home, accepts being naked even around his parents and friend, which his parents seem fine with. His parents seem just as relaxed as him if not more so.
It is only when his girlfriend is introduced. When he tells her (well his mother does walking by) what has happened she demands he goes the emergency room and he is slightly afraid of her, but he loves her.
When battling the giant monsters he doesn’t want to kill them, he only wants them to leave the area. He understands that they’re freaks, but he sees it as who isn’t.
The artwork is average about 90% of the time and is at its best when the focus is on the Ray himself. When it is on the Ray it looks good. However he’s the only one that looks good.
Overall
The story is okay, but as an introduction it is satisfying. It shows what needs to be covered. Shows a few good panels of the Ray, exhibiting his powers. Some comedy.
3.5/5
