I've only read a handful of issues involving Kaine so I wasn't sure I'd be able to follow this enough to enjoy it. Thanks to Chris Yost we get a recap of Kaine's origin and a rundown of the events that transpired during Spider Island. It's all very well done and he keeps it brief enough that it doesn't overshadow this debut issue.
The Story:
Kaine is on the run and finds himself in Houston, Texas. He's looking to grab some quick cash so that he can continue on his journey. He interrupts a smuggling operation to withdraw some money and takes down the two sides with ease. It is actually a scene that was strangely reminiscent of the dock scene in Batman Begins.
Kaine opens up the cargo hold to see what is being transported. To his shock and dismay they are trafficking humans as part of a slave trade operation. He finds a survivor and takes her to the local hospital. In the hospital we see what makes Kaine an entirely different character than Spider-Man as he uses some physical force to get the young girl medical attention.
Throughout the issue we see the troubled side of Kaine and what makes him tick. He's definitely less morally inclined than most heroes we see today. He has his share of problems and Yost does a great job of making you feel compassion for his current state and what he's been through.
I won't spoil anything else for potential readers but this is a great debut issue. For a relative newbie to the character I thoroughly enjoyed it and never once felt lost reading it. The art is very solid as well.
4/5 For a very good opening salvo from Chris Yost.
