There's been a lot of controversy over the reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. Was is really necessary? Some fans say Sony could have just continued the series they already had. Is it too soon for a reboot? Spider-Man 3 was about five years ago. Are all the little changes they're making going to ruin it? Find out here... ( SPOILER ALERT) PlotThere was only so much they could do with the plot. After all, it is an origin story and is based on a story basically everybody knows. However, they managed to throw in enough new elements to make it interesting. Peter, who has never known why his parents left when he was a child, discovers that their disappearance is directly related to the animal DNA splicing formula Dr Connors has been working on. Peter doesn't immediately find the dude who killed Uncle Ben, and his entire war on crime starts out as a hunt to find him. Peter becomes partially responsible for the creation of the Lizard. These new little twists definitely made the movie more interesting, and put the movie a solid head above Sam Raimi's 2001 movie in terms of plot. I also liked how the supervillian threat was more large-scale than in the other Spider-Man movies. Green Goblin never did anything more supervillian-y than almost killing a cable car full of kids. Sandman, Venom, and Harry were never really threats to anyone except Spider-Man himself. Lizard, on the other hand, is a mad scientist with a doomsday device threatening the whole city. Visual effectsBasically everything one would hope for. I don't remember anything specific that was particularly memorable or eye-popping, but the visual effects were definitely on par with all the other action movies we've seen recently. I didn't think I would like the first-person shots, but they turned out surprisingly well. I saw it in 2D (as I do most movies, since 3D is freakin expensive and hardly ever worth it). I have read in other reviews, though, that the 3D in this movie isn't particularly good. Some scenes end up blurred, and daytime scenes look a bit darkened. ActionWOO! Now THAT was a Spider-Man movie with good Spider-Man fights. Lots of flips and webs and defenstration (I learned from Spectacular Spider-Man that that's the word for being thrown out a window ) and using brains and creativity and brains to stay a half step ahead of an enemy who is a lot stronger and almost as fast. PacingTo be honest, the movie felt like it had a slow start. It was good for developing the characters and their relationships, and as a fan of all things Spider-Man I didn't think it detracted from the movie much at all. But some people with less Spidey fandom than myself might be slightly disappointed with this. Additional thoughtsI really didn't like the Lizard that much. He made for a cool movie villain, but he was really nothing like his comic counterpart. He looked too much like Killer Croc, and he still kept all of Connor's intelligence and British accent. Yeah, he went kinda crazy and tried to mutate all of New York, but he was still intelligent. The Lizard I know just isn't supposed to be like that. I didn't like Flash's sudden change in the middle of the movie. One of Flash's main things is that he's supposed to be a huge Spider-Man fan but still pick on puny Parker all the time. But here, he and Peter basically became friends by the end of the movie. Emma Stone beats Kirsten Dunst by a mile. A hundred miles. Stan Lee's cameo's seem to get better and better with every movie. WTF WAS THAT SCENE AT THE END?? WHO THE F WAS THAT??? The dude had white hair, wore a fedora, and could somehow appear and disappear instantly out of Connors' cell. That's all we're shown, and for the life of me I can't figure out who it might be. Electro? Mysterio? Somebody connected to Norman Osborne? SummaryThe Good: Great action and graphics, great acting and character portrayals, a few fresh twists to keep the plot from going stale, intriguing lead-in to another movie The Bad: Somewhat slow beginning, Lizard was nothing at all like the comics version, Flash Thompson changed too quickly, WHO THE F WAS THAT GUY AT THE END. 7.5-8/10 Not perfect, but still entertaining through-and-through. A good new telling of the story we already know.

Good review. I honestly didn't mind Flash changing. I think the combination of Parker humiliating him back opened his eyes to how much of a dick he was and the death of his uncle allowed Flash to stop being a douche. I love how he became a Spider-Man fanboy in the end, though. If anything, I have more of a problem with Lizard's mindset. That dude was all over the place, haha.

I think they were using a combination of Ultimate Spider-man and Spider-man: the Animated Series' plots. In an episode of Spider-man: the Animated Series, the Lizard attempts to use the Genetic Recombinator to turn everyone into lizards. Much of the "How he became Spider-man" is incredibly similar to Ultimate Spider-man.
Flash seemed to be going through some stuff of his own so when Peter punked him and Uncle Ben died it made him more sympathetic to Parker.

Yeah, I think some versions of comics have indicated that Flash has had some trouble with his home life too in high school, so it's understandable that he was sympathetic to Peter. When he first appeared, I couldn't help looking at him and thinking, "Someday, that dude is going to be G. I. Venom."

LOL! When they showed Flash Thomson I actually turned to my son and whispered "he's Venom in the comics right now and he's on Secret Avengers." His eyes got BIG.

Great review Nexus! I totally agree with the most things you've said. Just a few notes though...i didn't mind Lizard's intellect , i actually believe it was the only way to make him a more interesting villain than just a mindless wild creature. Just my opinion though. And one more, why do you put the fact that we don't know who the f* that guy was in the end, in the bad things? I mean, it should be good because the keep us wondering. Otherwise they would be spoiling the next villain, right?

Otherwise they would be spoiling the next villain, right? For me personally I prefer it that when they tease the next villain it is more direct (The Joker card at the end of Batman Begins, Thanos showing up at the end of The Avengers). Just a personal preference, but I agree that was a negative about ASM.

At least the gave us some clues to wonder who might be!

Absolutely my personal opinion, I can definitely see why people would prefer it the other way around.

Get off my back, I just saw Batman. I would give you a hard time about not seeing ASM as well, but I haven't seen TDKR yet so I can't.
