Hi guys. I've decided to throw my hat in the review basket. And start doing reviews
So I'm going to start with a short Trade. That is: Magdalena: Blood divine.
Here goes, have fun
What the flark is this?
It's the trade that collects the Magdalena mini-series Blood Divine as well as a portion of a Darkness arc where the Magdalena was present.
The Blood divine mini-series tells the of the final adventure of the first Magdalena in the modern Era, Rosalia, whom discovers vampires in Paris. At first she thoughts they were real vampires and was about to destroy them. Until she learns they are not really vampires but people infected with a disease and decides to spare them when she comes to the realization that they aren't evil.. Sadly the Vatican disagrees and they murder her.
The story in the 4th portion details the second Magdalena's, Mariella's, fight with the Angelus in central america to recover the spear of Destiny. The weapon of the Magdalena line.
Good points
Joe Benitez's drawing style is perfectly suited for the story and Marcia Chen delivers an excellent, to the point narration. The interludes with the two churchmen talking are especially enjoyable. And from an intellectual perspective, really useful to understand what the Magdalena is. The thoughts of sister Rosalia also give us a good understanding of a character that never got enough screen time before she died actually.
Gorgeous drawing also from Brian Ching in the 4th part dealing with the Angelus.
It serves as a good way to get into a lesser known portion of the Top Cow universe.
Bad Points
I don't know if it's just me, but panel to panel progression is in some places strangely organized and seems oddly placed compared to the dialogue and written boxes. Furthermore, some of the drawings of actions are confusingly made in some places.
Further frustration is the 4th part. The Angelus portion arc, which is totally pointless in the trade as it is just a minuscule portion of an arc of another character, the Darkness, with nothing to explain to the reader what is happening and what happened before.
Meaning that to understand the whole story of this portion you have to track down Darkness issues. Thus my opinion. It shouldn't have been in there at all. No transition and no entry explanation,
The Score
I give it a 3 out of 5 overrall for all the reasons stated above.
