Right, I’m the perfect one to review this game. Now don’t be fooled, it’s not because I’m a great reviewer or anything, no, it’s because any retard would be perfect to review this games as long as they’d never played a DMC game before. You see, DMC 4 was made with catering to new players in mind in order to generate a bigger fan base for the DMC franchise because apparently you need to be as popular as Halo in order to be successful. Anyway, I’d never played a DMC game before this so I am the target audience, so it’s this games job to make me want to buy other DMC games, a job that (surprise) this game utterly fails at.
Anyway when I started this game there was only one cut scene that I really tolerated, the Dante vs Nero one. It was cool, overtop, and made the gameplay look awesome. In other words it lied to me. The gameplay with Nero is boring and repetitive, basically forcing you to fight the same hordes of enemies over and over again in the same ways. You have three weapons: your sword which is useful only when in conjunction to your arm, your arm which is basically only useful when used with the sword, and your gun which I never found useful ever. One person pointed out that the gun can be useful and that I must have been using it wrong, but give that I’m new to the series and the game didn’t show me how to use the gun “correctly” then I say that it’s the games flark up, not mine. You see if you’re making a damn game for new players, then you better make sure that it’s easy for new users to really get the combat system. Otherwise you end up alienating the people you made the damn game for in the first place. Now there’s also Dante to play as and……….yeah, no problems there his gameplay is fun and full of variety thanks to all the weapons he gets.
Now then there’s also DMC4’s “story”, you see I put quotes there because I honestly didn’t give a shit and found the story boring so I looked up the story on Wikipedia. In other words the story blows and the only cut scenes that I like are the ones that laughably overdone and full of action, ie: almost ever cut scene with Dante. As for the characters, much like everything in this game I liked Dante the most, and I can see why the DMC series is so popular when you have such a fun character to use. That said, everyone besides Dante makes me want to stab myself in the eyes to avoid looking at their annoying ass faces. Sure, Nero starts out well but soon he spirals into the whiney character whirlpool that seems to appeared in the sea of games ever since characters actually gained personality beyond liking a princess. Almost every time Nero opens his stupid mouth he spouts annoying lines that make me want to stab him in the face, the supporting cast causes similar anger.
The boss fights for the most part are a little poor, save two. First, the Dante fights, really just the second one. Dante proved to be a bit more of a challenge and was actually fun to fight. The other good fight was against the first real boss, a giant fire centaur demon. A big problem with the bosses is that you fight almost all of them 3 flarking times. Twice as Nero, and once as Dante. So I can’t help but feel that the developers got a little lazy boss wise, as Dante ends up fighting Nero’s sloppy seconds, and then Nero has to fight the said sloppy seconds again, which I guess makes them throbbing thirds. Anyway, the bosses aren’t outright bad, but only Dante and the Centaur guy are really memorable. Most of them are just kind of big and after playing Shadow of the Colossus they all seem as “big” as those two dog boss things.
Really I’ve been saying one thing over and over again, this game isn’t bad, but it’d be much better if flarking Nero wasn’t involved. If Nero wasn’t here and it was only Dante, I might actually give this game a 4, but as it stands I give it 3 out of 5. There are better DMC games to play that don’t have Nero bogging them down. Anyway I don’t see how they could flark up this series more to be honest.
Oh flark me.
