Hi guys after a short break of that (mostly because of university). I've come to make my fourth review.
And so I turn my attention to Anung Un Rama, the beast of the apocalypse!
What the fuck is this?
This is the first trade paperback of the Hellboy series, written and created by Mike Magnola published by Darkhorse.
Hellboy follows the adventures of the eponimous title character Hellboy as he battles occult threats and gradually discovers who he is and what his purpose in existence is. Unfortunately, his purpose is to be the Beast of the Apocalypse that will destroy the world by releasing the Conqueror Dragon: Ogdru-Jahad.
The first trade covers how Hellboy entered the world and his first encounter with the sorcerer Rasputing and his nazi occultist cronies as well has his lovecraftian minion and Rasputin trying to summon the worm in the world.
It also contains two short stories. One featuring an encounter with Anubis, another with him fighting a talking cyborg gorilla...
The good
First of all this story is interesting as well as a breeze to read. You can really relax and enjoy. Most of the beginning facts are laid out simply, the first steps to a larger arc are simple to follow. And the characters are fun in themselves, especially HB
The comic has a very distinct art style with simple drawing that takes advantage of shadows and in your face style.
The Bad
This is not a series for everyone. If bizarre occult stories and prophecies are not your thing, stay away from it. The art won't appeal to everyone either.
Me I loved these aspects but in all objectiveness it's not for everyone.
The score
As an introductory, it is a robust piece of work. I couldn't ask for much more as my first taste of this series. I would recommend it to anyone. And they are easy to get and not to expansive to.
This gets a solid 4 out of 5
