Backstory:
My girlfriend's Dad bought me a big bag of old comics from the local antique mall and this was one of them. Back in the day I read a little bit of Alpha Flight but don't remember it being this much fun.
The Good:
Everything in this comic is self contained in a single issue. If this was done today it would have been drug out over a 6 issue limtied series and cost at least $20. Another old school element I feel that has been lost today is the reference points used. Talisman mentions something to Puck and underneath there's a beautiful asterisk that tells you it happened last issue!
The Bad:
Nothing.
The Story:
The story opens with Snowbird having a particularly bad nightmare. In her dream she is informed that one of her greatest enemies, the Great Beast Tanaraq, has slowly possessed the mutated form of her teammate Walter Langkowski. Unbeknownst to Langkowski the experiment that turned him into Sasquatch actually shattered an interdimensional rift that allowed the Great Beast Tanaraq to escape. Over the course of time Tanaraq has slowly asserted his influence over Langkowski. Snowbird realizes that it is her destiny to kill the Great Beast no matter if it cost her teammate his life.
We catch up with the rest of the team battling the robotic Caliber. After Alpha flight easily disposes of him Sasquatch appears to have been wounded in battle. In actuality Tanaraq has finally asserted his dominance and begins battling the team. Puck, Talisman & Aurora have limited success until Snowbird arrives. Realizing what must be done she takes the form of Tanaraq himself and rips out his heart. Aurora is shocked and mortified at her actions. However, Snowbird tells the team that their next mission won't be as easy. They must rescue the soul of Walter from the realm of the Great Beasts.
In conclusion, this was just a fun comic to read. The fact that John Byrne manages to squeeze everything happening into a single issue is a fine example of the skill of his storytelling. For someone who's never read this series I would highly recommend it.
4.5/5 for a nearly flawless issue.
