Looks like we're going to see the return of the Mandarin.

Days of Future Iron Man.
Not really excited about dystopian alternate futures, to be honest. But, in Fraction I trust, and Iron Man is still one of Marvel's best books, so naturally, I'm on-board.
PS - The Mandarin was seen recently, in Invincible Iron Man annual.

Yeah, I read his appearance in annual, but I wasn't sure where it took place in continuity. It seemed like a flashback story to me.

If memory serves right, Iron Man making his comeback courtesy of Stark: Disassembled, and Stark: Resilient was fleetingly mentioned in the annual, by people working in the film outlining the Mandarin's life, as opposed to him "dying" in Mandarin's film version.

Ah, that's right, I vaguely remember that. Personally enjoyed that story.

It wasn't bad, but out of character for the Mandarin based on his appearances in the volume preceding Fraction's.

Most likely, compared to the actual crap that I continued picking up and dropped Iron Man for. Looking back I continued for Execute Program before I dropped it. I was young and dumb and really liked the X-Men. ):

I can't recall an honest to God truly good X-Men story since forever (X-Force not withstanding).
Or, since Whedon's Unstoppable, to be more accurate.

Tragic, isn't it?

The most surprising thing is that Fraction himself has failed to deliver a story that is truly compelling, much like everything he has done in his Iron Man run, really.

I hate when Marvel makes trailers for books. This adds nothing above what Solicits and previews do accept with sh#tty voice overs.I'm not excited for a return of the Mandarin. His last encounter with Stark from his side was pathetic and I was hoping that Stark killed him so we didn't have so see him again.I'm expecting a cop out. What can they really do with the Mandarin that will matter? All they will do is make him this huge threat.Stark will find away to take him out and they he's gone for another couple years before they do the same thing again.

I am unimpressed by Fraction's take on the Mandarin (based on the annual), but can't the same thing be said about every nemesis? Naturally, Iron Man will best him in the end. No matter how many times the Mandarin "dies", or is MIA, he will always return as he is Iron Man's archenemy.

Why do they need the original? It's easier to do something new with a change in mantle.

Why do they need the original? It's easier to do something new with a change in mantle. Morrison did a meta-commentary on that with his Planet X storyarc on New X-Men. He basically cauterised the nature of the X franchise (or, pretty much every comic book franchise), for being stale and "unwilling" of following routes towards new things. In said arc, he brought back Magneto, killed him off in the exact same manner he "died" before his (Morrison's) run began, and Marvel proved his point spectacularly when they retconned the whole thing in under 3 months.
You just can't beat the classics. Spider-Man and Green Goblin, Superman and Luthor, Batman and the Joker, or Iron Man and Mandarin, they are bound together. Sure, I would love to see Temugin getting his time at the spotlight, as he has been severely underused, but even if he did have his time, the Mandarin would inevitably come back. In fact, his usage has been unexpectedly scarce over the past 15 years (he has only appeared in one storyarc, in volume 4), so it's his time.

I have a confession, I do not mind even the best villains dying forever and never coming back in an ongoing series.

The problem with Doom is that he has become the Wolverine of villains at this point. He has a beef with everyone. Take a look at his fights over the past couple of years: Iron Man (and as an extension, the Mighty Avengers), Thor, Bruce Banner & Skaar, obviously the Fantastic Four, Black Panther/Wakanda, Doctor Voodoo, Morgan La Fey, and others I may be forgetting. Ninety percent of what I mentioned occurred over the past year/year and a half, as well.If their demise is well executed, I do not mind at all, either. I'm just pointing out that comic book companies will never let iconic villains rest in peace forever.
