As promised to Decoy Elite. I am going to review a Web Comic.
*pauses to listen to the chatter of surprise*
And as promised I will review "Basic instructions".
So sit down and listen to your god as he delivers the truth in tasty concise words
What the Fuck is this?
Basic instructions is a comic drawn and written by Scott Meyer. You can read them all here: basicinstructions.net/
The basic premise is that in four panels he will give basic instructions for everything from "How to vow revenge" to "How to appreciate American cuisine".
The format of the comics are all the same. You have the narrator, giving the instruction in a manner that alone would see rational and well thought. While the dialogue of the characters is either crazy or zanny to go with it.
Hilarity ensues! ;D
The Good
This is a "joke of the day" web comic therefore you don't need to read the first one to laugh at the next. Each is self-contained and an end to itself. Scott Meyer while the art style is simplistic black and white has a very good grasp of realistic human proportions. By this I mean the characters in his webcomics look like they could be real people you meet on the street. Which really helps hammer the style's comic. It also speaks well of him that you do see an improvement on the drawing from the first issue to the last.
As for as the humor goes some are very, very funny like the one on coming up with a super-hero origin. Combined with the format. It's a reasonable way to relax and get a quick chuckle. As well, it is humor that caters well to people who like to think. Another good point.
The Bad
Considering that he updates daily and that therefore he has to keep up a fairly hard rate of production. There is a definite inconsistency on the quality of the comics. Produced, some are really hilarious while others have only elicited at best a short smile.
The Score
As I've often elaborated, Web Comics are not really my thing. But this is without doubt my favorite web comic so far. It is a solid daily out put that goes well with my morning coffee so Scott Meyer deserves his kudos for just having managed to keep me wanting to read more.
I give Basic Instructions a solid 4 out of 5 all elements considered.
