The Powells are about to go from ordinary to extraordinary. After 16 years of marriage, Jim and Stephanie's relationship lacks the spark it once had, and their family life now consists of balancing work and their two children, leaving little time for family bonding. During a family vacation set up by Jim in an attempt to reconnect, their plane crashes into the Amazon River. But this is where the fun starts for the Powells, as they soon discover that something's not quite right. Each of them now possesses unique and distinct superpowers. The pilot was written and executive-produced by Jon Feldman. The series is executive-produced by Feldman, Greg Berlanti, Morgan Wandell and David Semel, who also directed the pilot. Joe Hartwick, Jr. serves as producer. "No Ordinary Family" is from A BC Studios. (ABC/CRAIG SJODIN) TATE DONOVAN, ROMANY MALCO, JIMMY BENNETT, JULIE BENZ, MICHAEL CHIKLIS, KAY PANABAKER, CHRISTINA CHANG, AUTUMN REESER.

Has anyone else been watching this? It makes a change from all the "dark" superhero tv shows out there. The characters are very likeable and the show can go in many directions with the family showing powers. And showing different personalities as well as the supporting cast.

I'm going to have to go the opposite direction from what Mortal has said. I'm about ready to give up the show altogether. Thirteen episodes in, and there has been virtually no character development for anyone, and no changes to the status quo. Each episode ends with one of those plot twists that leaves the audience thinking "Oh holy cow this could change EVERYTHING." I can't think of a single one of those plot twists that hasn't been either 1) brushed over and quickly explained away within the first few minutes of the next episode 2) dumbed down so that it doesn't actually change anything or 3) ignored completely. So far, each episode of this show has been more painfully cliche than the last. It's getting to the point where I can accurately predict half of the plot of the episode within the first five minutes. None of the twists are even remotely original. The acting is acceptable at best. The dialogue is so cheesy it's difficult to listen to sometimes. The directing is lazy to the point of being facepalm bad at times.
I really really wanted to like this show. I've been hoping so much for a good new live action superpower-based show ever since Heroes quit. It started out cliche and predictable. I told myself that was just because the story was getting on it's feet. It would start getting better once the characters had been more fully established and had more time for development and change. It's been thirteen episodes so far. No development. No change. As hard as I have tried to like this show, and as many chances as I've been giving it, I just can't find anything good to say about it. If you haven't started watching it already, don't bother.

I've watched Smallville for years and I don't mind cheesy. They do a lot of stuff that irritates me, but I brush past it and then I get a few amazing episodes on top of the good ones. So, I wouldn't rule out the season with only 13 episodes. You were right on a few occasions. But it's target is an American family audience and the general family audience of American hasn't got the best of IQs. So I don't see a big enough reason to not tell people not to watch it if you don't like it.

The thing is, No Ordinary Family hasn't had an episode that I would call even remotely 'amazing'.
ಠ_ಠ I'm American...
lol but seriously, No Ordinary Family isn't exactly a well known show. I know a lot of fellow comics fans that weren't even familiar with the title when I mentioned it. It doesn't get much publicity. Heck, I only found out about it because it was mentioned off-hand in some article CV made. I don't think anyone watches this show apart from sci-fi/superhero fans. And that kind of audience has better taste for superhero-based shows than the 'general family audience of America'.
Sorry, that's just the way I see it. I can't think of a single thing about this show so far that I like. I keep watching it only because I keep giving it ''one more chance''.

I've seen 3 episodes of this (we're behind in the UK), and whilst I think it's an acceptable it's-late-and-I-can't-be-bothered-to-find-anything-else kind of show, it really is rather unremarkable, in a sort of sub-Smallville way (and I can't stand Smallville). The character of the DA guy gets on my nerves. Seriously, he's supposed to be a DA, he's a complete bonehead, totally "wacky" and annoying. Plus the young girl can't act. Also, I don't know if it's an "American thing" (I'm thinking it's not), but it goes on and on, and on about family family family. Freaking I KNOW. I get the point it's about family and how amazing family is, and yes I value my family but really, I don't need to be hearing about the importance of family seven hundred times in one episode.
How's that for a second post?

Yeah, it really hasn't anything substantial worth mentioning to most of the people who'd be interested in watching it, but I've been enjoying it. Like I said in the other thread, it's worth watching just to see what happens next. I disagree about it not having any character development though. Seems like everyone in it gets their time in the spotlight every episode, and they're all at a different place than they were from the start of the series. I actually think that's where the show actually shines.

Well I have only watched the first episode so far and yeah you can't really tell a lot from only one episode but it didn't really make me wanna see more of it. Maybe if I watch the rest of the episodes later, I have a different opinion but it is not really in my list of shows to watch. At least for now.

Yeah, I'm still enjoying this show. The powers they've been featuring lately have been pretty cool.

I haven't watched any of the recent episodes, nor do I plan to unless they are leagues better than the previous ones.

Well, I'm still loving it for the same reasons, so I guess in terms of quality, it hasn't changed a bit. Same steady character progression, same types of fights, same plot twists, same things I've been enjoying from the start, except better, so you'd really have no reason to pick it back up if you didn't care for it before. All I can say is the show delivers on everything I want.

Just caught the season finale on hulu and it was so tight. Everything came together so brilliantly. Everyone had such a vital role. Everything got amped up to like the nth degree. This thing definitely needs a season 2, especially after that ending. Definitely enjoyed every bit of this show. Might even buy it when it comes out on DVD.

@nexus You're talking so highly of the most recent episodes, I am contemplating watching it again. But before I do, I just have one question: has the status quo been changed at all? I stopped watching at episode 13 (No Ordinary Detention). The primary reason I stopped watching the show was because the writers never really took it anywhere. "OMG the dad's brother has been abducted by the dealers they pissed off earlier! And it's happening right at the end of the episode! They will have to deal with this in the next episode!!!" As far as I watched, that problem was never mentioned in any of the following episodes. "OMFG!! Right at the end of the episode the hot girl finds the dude's diary in his jacket, showing her which side he's was really working for before!! This could change so much!! Oh wait nevermind. He just used his powers to mess with her brain and convince her she never read that stuff. "Duuuuuuude! The guy just mindwiped the daughter! She's lost all her memories since the trip to South America!!! Holy crap!!. Oh nevermind they just fixed that really quickly. I went in 13 episodes, and the writers never got around to making anything stick. Every potential status quo-altering event was just loophole'd away or ignored altogether within the first few minutes of the next episode. Nothing ever actually changed.
So, to reiterate, I just want to know if there have been any lasting changes to the status quo in the last half dozen or so episodes that I've missed. If the writers have started to alter/evolve/expand the world of the show and make some changes that stick, I think I might catch up on what I've missed. But if everybody is still playing pretty much the same roles they were at episode 13, I have no interest in watching any more.

Like a quite a few people finding out. Some power upgrades. I still want to see what else JJ's powers will be able to do. Eventually, he should be able to predict were everyone will go. Like he should technically be able to tell the future with circumstances.

@nexus
Oh, that was your issue? Yeah, all the things that've twisted the plot weren't ignored. Yeah, they brushed over it to get through the episode, but you had to have known it would've all came back, and most of those--I guess we could call them--dangling plotlines all do come back in a big way. The only reason they brushed past them in the beginning was to lay some ground work for the end. I mean, it's nothing spectacular or anything, but it's nice. The mindwipe thing, the boss of the mom's company thing. I think they may have not addressed one particular question that happened last episode, or if they did it I missed it, but to sum it up, most of everything all eventually went somewhere.
As for some of the cliche stuff, well yeah there were a lot of cliche things happening, but cliche doesn't necessarily mean bad in my book, and I personally found all the plot twists very well played.
I'll admit, I speak highly of things I like, but it doesn't really take much for me to like something, so I'm betting my standards for quality are a bit lower than yours, especially since I loved the first 13 episodes almost as much as I loved the later 7. Almost.

Yeah, that news saddened me, because the finale really set up something that woulda been a great direction for the show. Ah well. All my favorite shows on TV end up getting canceled, so this shouldn't phase me that much.
